DB Update: Punch Pictures merge + director-producer merge

Postby Brian Thibodeau » Wed Oct 17, 2007 6:17 am

Was wondering if Punch Pictures Production Company and Punch Pictures can be merged somehow. I'm firmly convinced they're the same company, and since the DB listings contain no pictures, it's possible different editors added the company under slightly different names, perhaps one more complete than the other. The former is responsible for DANGER ZONE, the latter is responsible for it's sequel SOME LIKE IT COOL. Both are sequels to BRUSH UP MY SISTERS, so I'm guessing that falls under their umbrella as well, but I may need to post a screen grab (if I can find the disc) to prove it.

Noticed the company credit on the pro-grade DTV-er MY BABY SHOT ME DOWN tonight and (while wondering why Teresa Mak rarely made it to the big leagues—she's quite good in this) was curious to see if they produced anything else. I'm sure the company is behind more films than the DB suggests, but merging these two entries would be a start at bringing them all together.

Also, Leung Ching-fai and Rocco Leung are the same guy. Screen shots from MY BABY can be provided if required, but their Chinese names in the DB strongly suggest a merge (with alias). Plus, he's billed as Rocco Leung on MY BABY, which should thus become the main name, or at least the alias.

Prod. companies with different Chinese characters cannot be merged in the HKMDB. Maybe one of the 2 Chinese names are wrong but we cannot check this until we have the logos.

If nobody stops me in 15 days I will merge Leung Chi-Fai & Rocco Leung.

The first character in the Punch Pictures Production Company logo was entered incorrectly.

These are the best I can do, but here's a bunch of shots of the company name from some of their films, including at least one (HOT COP IN THE CITY) that is listed under the Punch's wrong spelling. With the exception of HOT COP, these are all taken from VCDs, so the quality's a bit shite, as they say. But you can certainly make out the shape of the first character and it's not like the one we have for Punch Pictures Production Company, but it does match Punch Pictures.

Unfortunately, none of the first VCDs of Punch movies will play in my computer, so most of these are from the closing credits. The DVD for MY BABY SHOT ME DOWN won't load at all, but since that film's already linked to Punch, perhaps the evidence provided below will be enough to merge the two entries anyways?

COMPANY LOGO (note first character) This can be added to the company's DB entry as well.

Logo as written in closing credits of HOT COP IN THE CITY (this film has the "wrong" Punch Pictures in the DB:

Also from HOT COP IN THE CITY:

Logo from closing credits of MY SASSY BOYFRIEND (this one's attributed correctly in the DB. This is a fuzzy frame, but the first character IS the same as all the others, despite appearances):

Logo from closing credits of DANGER ZONE (this one's also attributed correctly in the DB):

Logo from closing credits of SOME LIKE IT COOL (this one's attributed correctly as well):

Further proof from HKFA:

(Slow-loading) Entry for MY BABY SHOT ME DOWN. Punch Pictures is the first name beside "Organization" and it bears the same first character as all my scans above. Click on it and you'll see all six of their films: MY BABY SHOT ME DOWN, SOME LIKE IT COOL, DANGER ZONE, MY SASSY BOYFRIEND (all shown above) as well as BRUSH UP MY SISTERS and INFERNAL MISSION, which should now have Punch added as a production company. All of these films have a lot of cast/crew overlap as well, for what it's worth.
