DB Title Update: HONG KONG SPICE GALS (1999)

This is a partial update. I didn't bother with the complete opening credits, just the ones the offer information NOT already in the DB entry for this film, including the names of actresses who play three of the title girls (Connie Chan is the fourth, if the random group photos below are any indication). Complete closing credits are included, which include character names and plentiful credits:

They have the exact same Chinese given names, just different characters for their last names, but one is called "Nug."

Is NUG a legitimate transliteration of the third character in the younger actress' Chinese name?

I'm thinking her spelling should be changed to Wong Siu-Aau (2), with Gloria (mispelled in the SPICE GALS credits) added as an alias.

I just wasn't sure how we go about English names with lesser known performers like this one. It seems that some actors in the DB who are frequently billed (at least by my measure) with their English names in movie credits, have their English names only listed as aliases. Others have the full English+Chinese name as their main listing. Personally, I'd list her as Gloria Wong Siu-Aau, particularly if this turns out to be her only credit.

In that case the alias should (most likely) be moved into the primary name. The only time the English name should not be there is when it's exceedingly rarely used (Donald Chow anybody?) or perhaps somebody used different English names with no particular one being more common (no examples I can think of!).

There used to be a lot of English names that were only entered as aliases... I fix 'em as I find 'em, but rarely come across them these days.

Fixed Gloria

Any thoughts on changing her to Gloria Wong Siu-Aau, as outlined above?

I know they're not the same person, but since they both share the same third Chinese character in their names, and I've yet to hear of a Chinese person who goes by the name "Nug," as we have Gloria listed in her DB entry, I'm just thinking these two actresses need to be brought into alignment.

If that third character cannot be pronounced "Aau" then aren't they both wrong in their English spellings? I'm thinking that they should at least be similar—or corrected—in their main headings since they have identical given names (in Chinese).

My vote would be for "Wong Siu-Ang" for the younger one, as she acts in Cantonese in SPICE GALS. As for the older one, perhaps Wong Siu-Ying if those movies she appeared in are all mandarin language.

Yes you are right, according to the HKFA the English romanization of the older Wong is "Wang Xiao-Ing"

...which should give us a possible spelling for the younger Wong as well (unless "Ang" is more appropriate in her case).

I think we should keep the "Cantonese" romanization. In fact now I think we should change Gloria to Goria.
