Hmmm, I've always known Cheng Miu as Cheng Miu, but probably because of HKMDB... didn't know he'd fathered Ching Li!

This Taiwanese director, should be Tsai Yang-Ming primarily?

And I'd change Wong Lik (1) to Wang Li:

Changing Names?

Postby Bruce » Sat Jan 07, 2006 11:53 am

Names changes were discussed a few months ago in the thread at
http://hkmdb.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=42516

At the time, I said (and still feel):
Bruce wrote:I think we should be cautious, as it seems to me we are starting on a slippery slope which has no bottom. Shaw actors who were credited in English were almost always given the Mandarin transliteration. Does this mean that the primary English names for virtually all those Shaw actors are going to be changed?

I suggest this be cleared with Ryan before proceeding further. Whatever he says is fine with me.

and Admin guilao responded:
guilao wrote:Naming (of people) is about to undergo sweeping changes. I have been working with Ryan on coming up with a standard for displaying and entering names, and will be implementing in the next two weeks. I will provide details as we go...but in general it should put to rest the issues posed in this thread, as well as the "hyphen" thread.

Has this new "standard" been implemented yet? If yes, it should be complied with. If no, then name changes like these should NOT be made until the new standard is announced and complied with.

We must put the names as they appear in the english credits. If they appear in several ways in different movies, we must put them as they appear in more movies. That is the reason we put JACKIE CHAN instead SING LUNG and JINTANA FERREIRA instead of CHIANG KIT. It does not matter if they are in cantonese, mandarin or swahili.

You will not never find "GEUNG HING LOONG" in any movie, but this is the main name we have in our DB. This is not correct :?

Bruce wrote:I suggest this be cleared with Ryan before proceeding further. Whatever he says is fine with me.

That is the reason why I wrote "if nobody objects in 15 days...". Mr. Ryan, and everybody, has a deadline of 15 days to say "I disagree". If in 15 days nobody says nothing, I do the changes.

guilao wrote:I have been working with Ryan on coming up with a standard for displaying and entering names, and will be implementing in the next two weeks.

I think Mr. Guilao referred to the name display in searches. Now when you search for a name, it appears is main english name and his chinese name in the same display.

Bruce wrote:Has this new "standard" been implemented yet? If yes, it should be complied with. If no, then name changes like these should NOT be made until the new standard is announced and complied with.

If I am wrong, and there is another "standard" in the next two weeks, do not worry, I will wait these two weeks before beginning to change main names.

I think you are worried for the Shaw actors and not for the Shaw crew members (because of your own site). If this is the case, I can change only the crew members (Geung Hing Loong, Li Kei, Chow Fook Leung, etc.), because you are not interested in them.

Actually I am not very interested in actors, but in crew members.

All quite okay, as long as the main Cantonese name is listed as an alias.
This *MUST* be done, as there are some of us who know and search for these names by Cantonese phonetics only.

I recently updated crew listings for several films made by Kam Yeung Productions (late 1970s), and was annoyed to find that several of the crew I thought to be new additions were in fact already on hkmdb .... listed ONLY in Mandarin phonetics. This is so annoying ! Please be considerate and always at least list Cantonese phonetics as an alias.

What is wrong with calling him Bruce ? I understand he is widely known as such.

Actually I don't know where that Bruce came from but SB never credited him so. Maybe this was only his name in USA. For example: Liang Jia Ren is "widely known" as "Beardy"? I think he is only known in US (and maybe UK) like this. Actually he was never billed like that.

 sorry it was my fault.
I "created" these names according to the english credits.
Later, Mr. Kistner asked me to create the new names adding their cantonese aliases, and from then I am adding them, but the first names I created before his request had not cantonese alias.

BTW nobody here searchs the names in the chinese display? :?
