Additions and modifications to the database

I've been adding art to the dbase for sometime now, but I go back to check and either they have been removed, lost or missing. Should I still be adding them or is there something happening to reduce the number on the dbase or something else?

Since there hasn't been a reponse to this query, I'm going back to uploading art/photos unless otherwise informed.

I'd like to see more photos.

Magic8, why don't you try emailing Admin/Bob directly?

I've made some initial attempts at loading some photos to the database.

So far the attempts don't look too good. The pictures look too fuzzy. Granted, so far I'm using vcds for sourcing for the most part, since I'm focusing on the older films. Right now, I'm interested in creating photos for the actors' portraits. These samples just happened to be what I was recently watching.

I'm using what came with pc, WinDVD for the capture (to .bmp), then editing it down to profiles (and converting to .gif). It's the .bmp to .gif that seems to ratchet down the quality. Any suggestions or tips? I tried loading .bmps but the database didn't allow it. There's also a size limitation.

(I should have picked a lighter scene but I like this scene.)

The rest from vcds:

black and white (I need to pick better contrast but I liked these shots)

Thanks for looking.

Try using Power DVD for stuff directly from a disc and then convert to JPG. Easy to use and the quality ain't bad.

Hey dleedlee, size down the art to reduce the dots and get better resolution. If it looks too dark you can always adjust the contrast afterwards.

Do you think the two sample captures from DVD look okay, or can they be noticeably improved?

On the vcds grabs, well, they're from vcds. I figured the source was the main limiting factor. If I didn't have a good closeup handy, I just grabbed a scene with a good head shot.

Is there a recommended/standard size for posting to the database? On the Colour of the Truth french fry shot, I just threw it up there to see what it'd look like.

Thanks for the feedback.

I know that Ryan removed a lot of art a while back, and I do not recall what his reasons were. Maybe a lot of it was simply poor quality.

On the other hand, I am not sure to what lengths we can go to use material extracted from movies...For instance I uploaded the image of Kelly Chan from some magazine advertising she did. Is that OK? I am not really too sure.

Maybe Ryan can express an opinion on this. He claims copyright ownership of the database so it's partly his responsibility. On the other hand the images are on my server, so I have some responsibility as well.

In any case, I would love to have a lot more higher quality images in the database--especially of actors.

BTW, as dleedlee stated, if you need to contact with me just email me at the link below.

re: copyrights, I temporarily forgot about that. I did wonder whether it was okay to do or not. Well, I still need to do it for myself (hard to keep track of some of these people) but maybe I'll hold off on uploading anymore until this is clarified. I just know the photos from the HKIFF/HKFA publications and filmographies sure helped me in identifying various actors and figured it might help others.
