Removed Aliases

Postby bkasten » Tue Aug 18, 2020 3:21 am

Oliver's editorial access has been temporarily revoked for violating the editor's primary guideline. He deleted and changed names and aliases without notification. I wasted more than an hour recovering this - time that could have been better spent coding.

Unless someone objects or has arguments to the contrary, I will be restoring these valid aliases. Aliases are in parenthesis:

Films:

Heroes Two
('Fong Sai Yuk Yue Hung Hei Koon','Cantonese')
('Fang Shih Yu and Hung Hsi Kuan','')
('Blood Brothers','')

Hero of the Wild
('???????','')

Title Changed:
Iron-Punch Contest
('Iron-Punch Contest','')

The Tiger Jump
('Kendo','')

Person:

Henry Yu Yang
('Bruce Ly','Former English name')

Heroes Two:

Of course, I checked all around in the internet,
(taking me much time, too!) before I deleted "Blood
Brothers" – that seemed 99% to be some confusion.
We have a German VHS release with "Blood Brothers"
but that is the movie FRIENDS.

So, I would like to just see the use of this "confusing"
entry or some bootleg sleeve or whatever it was that
caused "Blood Brothers" here.

The other two aliases were just simple translations of the
original title. And I remember you saying they should
not be in alias sections, they are not valid there.

______
Hero Of The Wild:

This Chinese alias was just a repetition of the original Chinese
title above as the main entry ... in the alias section.
Not of any use in my opinion, forbidden in my understanding
of the rules. Do I really have to do a post for this?

______
Iron-Punch Contest:

Of course, I made this correction, as it was on the title
on the poster – WITH a hyphen. Someone did NOT transfer
the title on the poster CORRECTLY (happens quite often in
the database with my field of expertise, I have watched
this for a decade). On the lobbies the title is written without
a hyphen, I specified that super-exactly! For more transparency.
(Taking more of my time, seems now a waste!)

I do not remember it exactly, but the former main entry
wandered into the alias section. I did not delete anything there.
No loss here or anything. On the contrary, a very improvement
with this entry.

________
The Tiger Jump:

"Kendo" is a fragment of the German title.
German titles are not allowed. – Please someone
give proof of an American bootleg or something
with THIS title.

____________
Henry Yue Young:

"Bruce Ly", sorry, ridiculous entry. This name is on
the poster of BRUCE AND THE GOLDEN CHAKU ... did I miss
Henry in there? "Former English name" ... who said and
tracked this down once? Even more ridiculous.

And even if that was on another poster somewhere else
that I never got to know, especially on European posters
everything went wrong with names, and that doesn't make
them valid aliases.

I would agree with the first two removals- a non-standard Cantonese transcription for a Mandarin movie and a literal translation with no provenance. I don't know about Blood Brothers - it looks like there is another Shaw movie of the same title. Maybe Oliver should tell us why he thought it should be removed.

Iron-Punch Contest - I don't see a difference in the titles. Maybe it was a mistake? As for Tiger Jump - it looks like Kendo is the German title so I think that one's good to remove as well.

This is why you have to be careful. Not only do the two titles differ in one character, in fact, the title you removed is the correct Chinese title and the one we have as the primary one currently is wrong! ??????? is correct and ??????? is a mistake.

Oliver - thank you for your explanations. I read them carefully, and edited it a bit to leave in just the explanations.

I agree it can appear to be a grey area. The reason to post here is for documentation purposes and for the other expert editors to check in if necessary. It is not to argue and disagree necessarily. And you do not need to write a lot. The current editors set a very good example by posting just enough words and a reason. This is the expectation here.

When in any doubt whatsoever post your alias changes or removals here so others can see.

Let's review these, and we can move forward.
