and calros is furiously against that adding new job and musician, singer lyrics credit as always i think we should add all the credits
and i dont understand why if your like these kind of credit , you are not in favor of adding them, i know that bob is in favor, maybe he see far more further than his nose (not pointing you with that remark)
anyway no ones as good reason for refusing adding these credit and im kinda tired to fight alone for having a much better db, that the reason all my newest galleries have no crew credit, with all this nonsense i loose interest on crew
I'm in full agreement that we should have songs and singers credited where possible, even if the best info we can provide in some cases might be "Theme Song Performed by...." credit at the bottom of various DB listings. I'm not so sure singers who don't also appear on screen, or even singers who do, need to be credited with the main cast. They should have a separate line, even IF they are already mentioned in the cast list.
Hong Kong pop music is a vital component of Hong Kong cinema (and Hong Kong, really), and often shares or expands upon the context and emotion found in the films, so while I know there are a lot of Canto-pop haters among the ranks of Hong Kong cinephiles, I still believe that such listings would be a worthy edition to the database, and might serve to expand the tastes of newcomers to the form who just
might like what they hear and want to explore Hong Kong popular culture beyond just the movies.
I realize that adding singers to listings will take time, but from what I gather, the HKMDB isn't going away anytime soon. A lot of the screen grabs of credits that get posted in the "Additions" forum have song credits in them, particularly Mike Thomason's grabs for recent productions.
While I suspect Harlock might disagree, I'd be content if we just credited the singer and, where possible, the song title (transliterated if need be, if an English title doesn't exist), sort of the way IMDB does. Obviously, songwriters and producer credits would be a nice inclusion too, if those are indeed the other two credits generally included in song listings in Hong Kong movie credits, but if that proved too difficult in translating names that have yet to appear in the database etc., then I wouldn't have a problem leaving them out.
But let's face it, more than just about any other cinema on earth, Hong Kong's probably has the highest number of actors who also have singing careers, and combine the two when they sing songs for their own movies, or have their tunes used in the movies of others. Whenever possible, I've always tried to at least credit the singer of a theme song in many of my reviews, and will often credit others when I recognize either their voices or their names in the credits. Usually it's something simple, like "Theme song peformed by XXX, with additional songs by XXX, XXX and XXX" and so on. I just figure it's a nice little bonus to let people know that someone they're watching on screen is also a half-decent singer.
But then maybe I'm biased. I love Cantonese pop music.
Or maybe it's just a
thing with us Canadians.
