About the family name "lu" ?

Postby Oliver Sodemann » Tue Aug 25, 2020 12:12 am

Hi there,

just was wondering again, connecting this actor to an image

http://hkmdb.com/db/people/view.mhtml?i ... ay_set=eng

why ? is transcripted as "liu".

In my long-term occupation with Mandarin and Cantonese
a "lu" in Mandarin can never became a "liu" in Cantonese.
If I ever saw any "liu" at all, supposed to be Cantonese.

What I saw most with ? was maybe a "luk". As all "lu"s,
also the one with "Jamie Luk", but being different, would be
transferred likewise.

A complicated topic, I know.

But even my friend Toby Russell was wondering about "liu",
and he speaks Cantonese rather fluently, having lived in
HK for six years.

We had the case of "Liu Chun-Ku" in the alias section recently,
but that was the alias sections, not the main entry. Whatever
misspelling in some credits it derived from.

In my opinion all main entries should have a consistent
transcription of any character, on the basis of the decision,
if we chose the Mandarin or Cantonese name (depending on
the actor's birth or working place).

So with ? I would support "lou" (pronounciated the English way;
in German this wouldn't work, we would come closer to the Mandarin
with "lu" or a "lue"), like it is in the main entry a here now

This is not analogue to "Liu Ping (1)" – but should be in my opinion.

So, please, Bob, give me a clear answer about that
"liu" here, or where the decision for "liu" once originated from.

Many thanks for having some thoughts about my topic here.

Best,
Oliver

Thanks. This primary English/romanized name is clearly wrong and should be changed.

If nobody has evidence to the contrary, I will eventually change this primary English family name to Lu.
