| Xie rose to prominence after the success of the Communist takeover of China in 1949. As such he is regarded as one of the leading lights in the so-called "third generation" of Chinese directors. His credits include "A Dream of Red Mansions," "Early Spring in February" and "Bosom Friend."
Xie was a deputy head of the Beijing Film Studio, one of China's major film production companies, chairman of the China Film Association and president of the China Film Directors' Guild, according to the Xinhua news agency, and served as a legislator in the National People's Congress. (Variety) |
