Summary: Period Drama

I have been wanting to watch this film for over a year now, and the opportunity presented itself and so for the the review.
Set during the Boxer Rebellion, a young woman is offered an arranged marriage with a mildly retarded shopkeeeper and she accepts. He is rather ineffective in the area of sex, and she becomes involved with one of the men who frequents the shop. The ensuing relationship is very intense, and he finally moves in with the agreement of the husband. This movie has a gritty - early HK feel to it given the 1992 release. Also, during the development of the story, a rival business begins threating all three and the chaos that swept through China during the Rebellion is clearly evident and very powerful. This movie is a nice change from hardboiled and martial arts HK films and worth the watch. Both Chiu Gwan and Zhao Jun give good performances and are consistently so throughout the film.
