Summary: MORE comedy than horror

Just like the 'Young and Dangerous' series, these series of horror movies don't appeal to me!! The ONE story is broken into 3 parts!!

The first part looks at poor Simon Lui picking up some unwanted visitors!! There is some funny parts in this section.

The 2nd looks more at Louis Koo and the focus changes to horror. Though not that scary, the idea of this section is good.

The 3rd part is them in a haunted building and this is where it's BOTH horror and comedy. NOt so funny and not so scary unfortunately. The most boring of the 3 parts,

There hasn't been a hong kong movie i would call scary yet that i have seen (WELL there was a Chow Yun Fat horror movie but that was when i was very young!!) I think this movie is too lost in what it wants to be!! TO joke at the first part then get serious in the second part didn't work for me!! It felt like 2 different movies!! Not so good.........

5.5/10

Summary: Troublesome Night 5 (1999)

'Troublesome Night' has been a well-established movie series with three elements in a movie -- horror, comedy and romantic. This time is the fifth instalment in their series which shows how successful they are.

Starting from the second series, 'Troublesome Night' has been a series focus on a career for each instalment. Part 2, 3 and 4 focus on radio shows, funeral related business and travel. This time 'Troublesome Night 5' focuses on taxi drivers. The story is around Daniel KOO Tin-lok who is a driver borrowed money from loan-shark and escaped from the loan-shark by moving to the new apartment which contains lots of supernatural stuffs. Followed by the interaction with 'ghost' and agreement, Daniel was agreed to give his money by making him wealthy. He then becomes wealthy by luck but he hasn't followed his promise and things happened ......

When compared with 'Troublesome Night' series, though it is the fifth instalment, you can still find the surprise from the movie. One of the issue is the correlation between the second and the third story. In the past series, the three stories were packed loosely which is relatively easier to write. This time, script writer TSANG Kwok-chi and LAU Hau-wai tried to put them together by putting a mother-and-son generation in the movie. The results is positive. It is very glad to see that TN series can still get the new stuffs from time to time.

The first part of the story is very typical. However, Herman YAU and script writers tried to play tricks out of traditions. In the first story, Helena LAW Lan is a very typical character while Emily KWAN Bo-wai is out of expectation. Together with the performance of Simon LOUI Yue-yeung, though it is a bit horrible, it is still funny.

The second and the third story can be discussed together. The story starts with Daniel KOO and Amanda LEE Wai-man who are couples and their interaction with Ben NG Ngai-cheung. The main objective of the story is to talk about a cross-generation ghost story. In terms of skills, it is sometimes typical, but the effect is very funny. The chemical effects of Helena LAW Lan is very significant. Though there is not much elaboration between KOO and LEE, you can still get the romantic feeling at the end. Of course, if they can put more elaboration on such issues, I think the effect can be better.

In terms of performance, since 'Troublesome Night' has been a well-established series with some core performers like Daniel KOO and Simon LOUI, this guarantees the basic acting. In this series, the performance of LAI Yiu-cheung and Helena LAW Lan is outstanding. LAI does not have much role in the movie but memoriable. One point I would like to point out is the role played by Emily KWAN Bo-wai is also funny.

In short, 'Troublesome Night 5' can still maintain the quality production of this series. The story is very smooth with some surprise in the stories. Together with the good team work between performers and the crew, the overall performance of the movie is very good which is worth-watching in theatres.
