Summary: 9.5/10
Chang Cheh and Jimmy Wang Yu's follow up to THE ONE-ARMED SWORDSMAN is nearly as impressive, with an excellent script and superb production/direction. The film has a very classical feel to it, an epic full of melodrama and passions, and some great dialogue (with better than average subtitles, thankfully).

This flick takes place over 2300 years ago in China during the time of Warring states or Zhang Kuo. During this time, there were many numerous petty city-state kingdoms that had been consolidated into about seven major states and a few minor enclaves. Those who were rich would be a part in the military. All other folks were just plain old common people. All the major states fought with each other in their attempt to overtake one another for greed and power. War was perpetuated because tradition already demanded that all Chinese be unified and because almost every lord aspired to become a great unifier. Heroes would appear everywhere for different reasons with their own concept of what is right and just. Every Hero or nobleman had honor and loyalty high on their list of virtues. In the case of this flick, the hero, Nieh Cheng (Wang Yu), is the perfect example of honor, loyalty, courage, and a strong sense of moral integrity has he became one of the greatest political assassins of his time. How did Nieh Cheng, a humble, common person, mammas boy who is doubles as an excellent swordsman in his spare time, just so happen to become an assassin? Nieh Cheng always wanted to be a hero and die like one. He gets the opportunity when the Premier of a city-state, Yen Chung Tzu (Tien Feng), learns of Nieh Chengs greatness through a a dying friend after his family is ambushed and killed by the men of a rival, Han Kwei (Wang Chung Hsin). Yen Chung Tzu travels far to find Nieh Cheng to become his blood brother and ask him to take up a favor for him. The favor of REVENGE. Nieh Cheng, originally has to decline Yen Chung Tzus plea due to his Mothers disapproval, but after his Mother dies, Nieh Cheng seeks out Yen Chung Tzu to take up his favor so that he can die a true hero. Nieh Cheng, with only a passion for being a hero in his heart, sets out to kill Yen Chung Tzus sworn enemy, Han Kwei, in a bloody, melodramatic, yet ironic ending that will leave you shaking your head in disbelief. Its one against thousands. Ive never seen a one man kill so many! Great flick.
