The Ape Girl

Summary: 5.5 out of 10

In this low budget Taiwanese period piece, a feral ape-girl (Gam Fung Ling) is taken from the wild by an old master and trained in monkey kung fu, reading, and speaking Chinese. After wandering into a martial artist's birthday party and sparring with the guests, she is drawn into a plot to place an evil Manchu prince (Chen Sing) in power. The ape girl falls in love with the Prince (making her possibly the first woman of any species to fall for Chen Sing) and does his dirty work until she finds he is seeing another woman. After a bizarre plot tangent in which she attempts to turn into a human, she comes out looking like a normal girl, but with a huge monkey's tail. She must then use her tail kung-fu to topple the evil prince, now the evil emperor, from his throne. Lo Lieh makes two brief fighting appearances, and appears to completely switch from good guy to bad guy for no reason. Ape Girl is 30 minutes of excrutiatingly dumb Cantonese comedy, followed by another hour of excrutiatingly dumb Cantonese comedy mixed with some romance and mediocre fight scenes. The inclusion of fighting heavies Lo Lieh and Chen Sing, who just can't seem to keep his shirt on in this one, and some fairly solid choreography keep "Ape Girl" from being a total waste of time. -S.M.

A monkey girl (Kam Fung Ling) is captured and taught gung fu by an old Master (Miao Tien). Later, she comes into contact with the 4th Prince (Chen Sing) and naively steals the current Emperor’s will so that the 4th Prince can alter it to make himself the next Emperor. The Monkey Girl falls in love with the 4th Prince and tries to make herself more pretty by soaking her body in a solution that will make her “monkey-ness” disappear. Now pretty, but still with her deadly monkey tail, the Monkey Girl finds out that the 4th Prince is now the Emperor, and very bad man to add. The Emperor tries to kill her and the 8 Heroes, but when she and a few heroes survive the hidden bomb blast, the Monkey Girl decides to fight back. Ho hum.
