Young and Dangerous 5

Summary: oh dear...

well, back once again, after a slightly lacklustre, yet still prefectly watchable, fourth film, andrew lau brings us a fifth film about the hung hing boys. unfortunately, the series' best character is nowhere to be seen...

nam (ekin cheng) travels to malaysia with mr chiang (alex man) and is introduced to chan ka nam (paul chun) and uncle seven (wong tin-lam), although it is his female companion, mei ling (shu qi), who grabs his attention. still, as well as striking up some kind of strange relationship with mei ling, who keeps popping up in hong kong, nam joins forces with chan in a couple of questionable ventures; a casino ship and some malaysian real estate. things seem to take a turn for the worse, when szeto ho nam (mark cheng) turns up in causeway bay and starts making some ting sung style trouble...

this is poor. for a start, there's no chicken and, let's face it, jordan chan has been the jewel in the 'young and dangerous crown. then, there's the criminal under-use of both anthong wong's dai-fai and sandra ng's fantastic sister 13. still, with only a few scenes between them, sandra ng and her skint partner(?) provide the most interesting parts of the film. i suppose i should mention danny lee's appearance, which still doesn't do enough to elevate this above bog standard.

i hear there are still some good moments to come in the future installments and related spin-offs. things couldn't really get more average than this...

Once again, Ho Nam's "empire" is threatened. This time it's by a young upstart also named Ho Nam (Mark Cheng). What could have been a potentially interesting plot is dropped in favor of something involving real estate fraud, which is later dropped in favor of some silly kickboxing tournament between the rival gangs. The creators of the film took a long time (at least in terms of the series) to make Y&D5, but apparently they forgot to write a decent script. The movie goes all over the map. Characters and entire plot lines come and go at a whim and there are huge holes in the film, such as where the hell is Chicken? Ho Nam cannot carry the movie on his own; most of the enjoyment out of the previous installments came from watching Ho Nam and Chicken's relationship and, I'm sorry, the relationship between Ho Nam and a ditzy girlfriend (Hsu) just doesn't cut it. Lee is absolutely wasted in his role as (what else) a cop, and, once again, Anthony Wong's role amounts to nothing more than a glorified cameo.

Definitely the worst of the series; even big fans of Y&D were put off by this rubbish. Watch if you're a completist only.

Summary: implausible plot is carried out with irresistable charm.

This installment of the series uses some very silly plot devices to advance the saga of Ho Nam [Ekin Cheng] and his Hung Hing gang members. Totally implausible plot developement is carried out with irresistable charm. The Bob and Partners team put all that Golden Harvest money to excellant use, as production values are very high. No Thailand excursion this time around, the Hung Hing boys travel to Malaysia for fun and intrigue.

Summary: A dismal installment, but not that bad

Ekin Cheng returns as Chan Ho-Nam in the fifth installment, where an absent Chicken (Jordan Chan) and Shuk Fan (Karen Mok) result in probably the one that lacks the most in the whole Y&D series.

In this installment we see Ho Nam facing turf rivalry (again), but this time Hung Hing goes a bit more political. The bad guy offers Nam a challenge to a kickboxing match, as they both go head-to-head ina rather short, pointless finale.

Ekin Cheng was good in this movie, but he still wasn't good enough to save this movie from it's drab, overused plot. Luckily Anthony Wong and Sandra Ng save the movie as their small characters seem to be the most interesting thing in this installment. (The title song was pretty good too)

All-in-all: Nothing new, rather boring, but worth watching if you've watched the last 4. But don't expect something very great.

Summary: another one?

For some reason I had thought there were only 4 parts to the Y&D series. I only wish I had been right. In this installment Ho Nam's district is being invaded by a rival group. Everywhere there are fights between the two over Causeway Bay. Ho Nam accepts a challenge against the rival leader for how to decide who will control the territory. They decide to have a boxing match. Through much of the movie they are training, getting ready for what turns out to be a short fight. After seeing the first four this one added a little more character and depth to the story, but beyond that was lacking in entertainment. But if you've seen the first four, you might as well see this one.

Summary: TERRIBLE

Now I'm flat-lining! This is terrible. If anything, there was one thing that might have saved this series, and that was time. If these had not been rushed then they might have been better. The first three were filmed in the same year. But this STILL wasn't the end of the series yet...

Summary: Ho Nam's Solo Act

This installment focuses solely on Chan Ho Nam. By now, his rank has gone up and his image has changed. More of a political gangster rather than a rascal. The absence of Chicken and his consort (Karen Mok) is greatly missed (I take it he is busy somewhere else being a newly elected branch leader... and a newly-wed gangster). Even "Da Fei" shows little of his presence. The ending is a dissapointment. It would be more satisfying if Chan Ho Nam lost in the kickboxing duel against the villain. That ending may lead to more character development and stuff (Besides, after a look at the villain's physique, Chan Ho Nam should have been beaten to pulps within seconds). I suggest this movie to the Y&D fans only.
