Summary: A little something for everyone

Mostly a heroic bloodshed action movie, with a dash of screwball romantic comedy. Ng Chi-Lone (Nicky Wu) is a reckless young cop who happens to meet Chiu Kwok-Ho (Winston Chao), a triad trying to get out of the business. When Ho's partners try to off him, he entrusts his girlfriend Ying (Rene Liu) to Lone. Lone puts her up with his "auntie" Honey (Carrie Ng, looking way better than she did in "Deadly Illusion") and her daughter Tung-Tung, a cutie who's after Lone and is jealous of Ying. Because he is spotted with Ho, Lone is suspended from duty.

At this point the movie becomes a genuinely funny (as opposed to forced and silly) romance; Ying and Lone start to tentatively connect, while Honey pursues Ho. Meanwhile, Ho's partner's men keep popping up to finish everyone off.

The cinematography is noteworthy, punctuated by quick cuts and severe Dutch angles. Director Clarence Ford has obviously taken some cues from John Woo (a teahouse and a library shootout), but "Thunder Cop" seems more an homage to Woo's style than a straight rip-off. Ford shares Woo's fondness for slow-mo, but overdoes it at times. Still, the gunfights are just this side of "totally over the top", and the kung-fu skirmishes are convincing and well-shot.

Since the story is complex, you may need to watch it more than once to really understand the relationships. Good thing it lends itself to repeated viewings. Look for a very brief cameo by "Wing Chun"'s Yuen King Tan as an undercover cop.
