Reviewed by: dandan Date: 02/18/2007 Summary: i miss you... bo (tsui hark) is a triad boss, who's about to begin a stint in prison. before he goes, he asks hung (eric tsang), his timid, younger brother, to take care of his two women; ping (margaret lee) and mimi (loletta lee). ping is a mouthy, gambler with mounting debts, whilst mimi dreams of being a singer, but has been tricked into being a stripper in japan. luckily, hung manages to save both women, but trouble is on the horizon ans he and mimi find themselves falling in love... patrick tam directs one of the final scripts that wong kar-wai wrote, before moving in to the director's chair, and the result is a little special; the two combine to produce a classy drama that just looks and sounds great. eric tsang gives an outstanding performance alongside loletta lee, who's quite a sweetie. tsui hark, who i love to see in front of the camera is great; he's smooth, intense and menacing in equal measures. margaret lee is also great, adding a natural quality to ping's goofiness. a great cast, giving great performances, combined with tam's smooth, restrained direction and a solid screenplay from wong, make this a very enjoyable watch indeed. a little gem.

Eric Tsang's performance in the lead role, as the kind-of wimpy "younger brother" of the volcanic Big Bo, is by turns charming and infuriating. Tsui Hark as Big Bo positively radiates menace, and gives his creepiest performance. Patrick Tam's visuals are at times arresting. And Loletta Lee looks great, in her most exposed role before she shed all in 1993 (Crazy Love). Margaret Lee's character is as goofy and earthy as ever, but it's hard to believe anyone could be as daft as her. I found the story too hard to believe, and somehow it didn't hold interest. Reviewed by: SBates Date: 02/23/2001 Summary: Classic I saw a copy of this that had hard-to-read subtitles, from a Media Asia VCD. The look of this film is absolutely fantastic! many of the elements that distinguish wong kar wai's work are in their nascent form here. disjointed editing, meticulous color schemes, elaborate shot set-ups, repetitive use of pop songs, etc. Patrick Tam must have really influenced Wong. I have never seen any of Tam's other films but now I want to. anyone who has never seen this film should try and track it down, it's a fabulous film.
