The concept is good, but the execution lacks engagement, especially at the beginning when it failed to give me a reason to continue watching. Also, the development of the new romance feels less than natural. Having Ekin Cheng in the cast certainly doesn't help. Reviewed by: j.crawford Date: 10/08/2006 Summary: heavy melodrama The Floating Landscape won the Best Cinematography award for veteran cinematographer Arthur Wong Ngok-Tai at the 23rd Annual Hong Kong Film Awards. It also received 4 other nominations including Best Actress (Karena Lam Ka-Yan), Best Art Direction (Ben Luk Man-Wah), Best Costume and Make-Up Design (William Chang Suk-Ping), and Best New Director (Carol Lai Miu-Suet). Produced by veteran Stanley Kwan Kam-Pang and Arthur Wong Ngok-Tai, this heavy melodrama about death and love features a touching performance from Ms. Lam. Most of the movie is shot on location in cold, wintry Qingdao and the visual uniqueness of the surrounding area combined with the moving sound design of the film make this an outstanding achievement for sophomore director Carol Lai Miu-Suet.
