This one's in the DB as CUT OFF THE THROAT, but I can only find one other source claiming that as the film's title, and that's Buyoyo. The sleeve has no English text, so I suspect they just made it up based on the plot description and/or the images on the package, and someone repeated it here.

This is a Taiwan production, but MIGHT be a HK-Taiwan co-production, as it's filmed in both locales (though mainly Taipei). Perhaps the credits will shed some light, not sure.

On screen title is THE RAPE (despite no rapes occurring in the film), which I've added as an alias for now, but I believe the titles should be switched. CUT OFF THE THROAT can remain an alias since is DOES exist under that title and someone might just buy it some day and come here looking for it under that name, and since we've got the credits below, we'll now be the best source for info on it :

Some time ago I wanted to ask, but always forgot, about checking on-screen titles of the movies, because sometimes main title listed in DB is not the same, or not full (like On parole 2), or the on-screen title is listed as an alias, but in my opinion it should be the main title.

Not really. This movie is one from my collection that I bought in 2001 at my favorite vcd shop on the Bowery in Manhattan. Simon and Strawberry on the package was good enough for me. After I watched it, I guess I thought it was so bad that it knocked the memory of the opening title sequence out of my head.

In 2005, I got a scanner and started adding covers from my collection to the DB. The movie wasn't here. I never watched the disc then, though I posted my scans looking for help with the english title.

I've found a couple of these on occasion as well. I'll usually mention them here, especially if they need a credit update and I can take some screenshots, so someone can make the switch. I suspect there are more...

Gotta love movies where "name" stars like Simon and Strawberry drop by in their street clothes for a few scenes and get nearly top billing! I thought the Hong Kong "police station" was amusing: looked like a barely-furnished apartment with 2 miniature Chinese flags sitting on a desk! Such authenticity!

You have the ability to appreciate movies like this on a "so-bad-it's-moderately-entertaining" level, so I'd imagine you'd get a few laughs out of it! It's played pretty straight in spite of a ludicrous script, which generates a few giggles. As you can see by the credits above, the weapon of choice is a hobby knife the killer uses to cut the throats of an assortment of interchangeable girls with no backstories. To confound the viewer, the filmmakers make sure that EVERY non-cop character in the subplots brandishes a hobby knife in a crazy, threatening manner at some point during the film. You'd think they were a new fad in Taiwan or something. If you can get it cheap...

I noticed the director has a long history as a bit player in martial arts films from the early 70's to the mid 80's, but never seems to have risen above that. This movie feels like a make-work project for him, and it's hardly surprising he hasn't directed anything since.

There were so many movies being made in '99-'00 that almost anyone could direct! This actually seems like 2 movies that they spliced together. You can really see the difference between the work of the HK crew and the Taiwan/Taipei crew. I guess my favorite scene in this is the "meanwhile back in Hong Kong" sequence which has Strawberry walking around wearing an over-sized flannel shirt.

If you can get it cheap...

So true about the number of films from this period. Surprisingly enough, there's was a lot of quality stuff that fell beneath the radar (or tastes) of most of the experts both here and elsewhere (if the review sites are anything to go on). The problem is you have to dig to find them, and stuff like this inevitably gets in the way! But in the long run, it's so worth it to find the gems.

My favourite scenes are pretty much any involving the killer, who wears a gigantic blue raincoat with a big yellow stripe that makes them look like a Swedish flag! At least two of the kills take place in daylight, and you'd think such an outfit would draw more attention! Gotta love those Strawberry scenes, though. Only in Hong Kong cinema do you find so many scenes like that, where someone just walks contemplatively along a busy streetscape while the filmmakers are probably hiding in a van across the way so they don't have to get permits, etc. In a city like Hong Kong, anywhere you point a camera you get free production value and a whole BUNCH of extras who have no idea they're being immortalized on film.

Based on this image I think we have an ID. This is the drunken husband in The Rape, I think.

Could be. I won't be able to take a comparison shot from THE RAPE for a few days, but when I can I'll post it so we can see. I do notice at least one actor, Yu Jye, appears in both cast lists for THE RAPE and GUARD SOLDIER.
