Not to be a pain, but what are the criteria behind merges like this? :?

I realize these two people supposedly have the same sounding name once it's spelled out in English, and indeed their careers seem to coincide with each other (hell, even the same company!), but are those the only deciding factors in this situation? Their Chinese names are different, after all, and I'd hate to think that someone is actually losing their credits to someone unrelated just because the names sound the same.

There've been other merges along these lines over the months, many at STSH's behest, and while I'm fine to defer to his expertise in most areas (including ones like this if I'm missing the corroborating evidence somewhere, which is very possible ;) ), I'd just like to know that we're not merging in these instances (when at least one significantly different Chinese character is present in the name) solely based on romanization, "sound" or similar career timelines. Obviously, there are other cast/crew people who have the exact same chinese names who've managed to stay separated (the various Wong Chi-Keungs, for example), while others with different Chinese names, like these two Poon Man-kits, who get merged despite differences.

And just to be clear, I'm aware that the characters in Chinese names can vary from time to time when if comes to film credits, and that credit writers might even write the character they're more familiar with rather than the one the person actually uses, but again, what criteria do we use to deduce that this has happened when we're NOT dealing with actors, where we can at least track down photos/character names/multiple credits to piece together clues if needed?

Just wonderin'...

1) When one of the characters of a name is very similar to the other, it is very possible they are the same person.

2) Also, if they have the same job and worked with the same persons (or same company) it is very possible they are the same person.

In this case, 杰 and 傑 are actually the same character (one is simplified and the other traditional)

Wong Chi-Keung is a special case because this name is very common in China.

I see! Thanks.

It might be a help if people requesting such merges could volunteer that info when they start their threads, if not for the benefit of those of us who don't read Chinese (which would still be nice), then for posterity when someone might question an entry down the road, so they can be directed to an appropriate forum thread where they will see an explanation of the change. As it stands, it sometimes seems like it's a "just between us" sort of thing among contributors with a better understanding of the language, which leads people like me to ask questions.

Just a thought. ;)

I prefer people who ask these merges are "virgin". For example Mr. WBlaik had no idea about the merging rules and he spontaneously asked a merge.

Anyway if I am not sure, I will say "not sure".
