Jia Ling / Ka Ling mash up

Postby duriandave » Sun Oct 22, 2006 6:25 am

This has been bugging me for a while, but I haven't had a chance to sort it all out until now.

There are many films attributed to the Cantonese star Patsy Ka Ling
http://hkmdb.com/db/people/view.mhtml?id=2461&display_set=eng
which should be attribute to Mandarin actress Jia Ling
http://hkmdb.com/db/people/view.mhtml?id=24532&display_set=eng

Below are the films that should rightfully be attributed to Jia Ling. It was easy enough finding them, because they are Mandarin films. But I also double-checked everything against the HKFA catalog, and noted some some films that couldn't be verified against their data.

Red Bloom in the Snow (1956)
The Orphan Girl (1956)
Merry-Go-Round (1956) ... Pang, sister-in-law
Strange Hero (The Red Lotus Temple on Fire) (1956)
The Long Lane (1956)
Fresh Peony (1956)
Season of Budding Roses (1956)
Foggy Night, Fright Night (1956)
A Matter of Face (1956)
Golden Lotus (1957) ... Luo's mistress
Life with Grandma (1957)
He Has Taken Him for Another (1957)
The Angel (1958)
Red Lantern (1958)
The Blessed Family (1958)
The Magic Touch (1958)
Crimes of Passion (1959)
Crime of Passion in the Mansion (1959)
Sister Long Legs (1960)
Devotion (1960)
Beauty Parade (1961)*
HKFA attributes this incorrectly to Ka Ling. Since Jia Ling made other films for Cathay, it seems likely that she also starred in this one.
The Witch-Girl, He Yueer (1961)
Unspeakable Truths (1962) ... Mrs Du
Father Takes a Bride (1963)
Coffee Girl (1963)
The Magic Lamp (1964)
Sons of Good Earth (1965)* ... Lao Zhang's wife
HKFA does not list this film in Jia Ling's filmography, but since it is a Shaw Bros film it seems likely that she starred in it.
Double Trouble (1968)*
HKFA does not list this film in Jia Ling's filmography, but since it is a Shaw Bros film it seems likely that she starred in it.
Money and I (1971)
Mr. Funny Bone (1976)*
HKFA does not list this film in Jia Ling's filmography, but since it is a Shaw Bros film it seems likely that she starred in it.

Thanks, David, I've been bothered by this too but haven't put the effort to try and sort it all out. I'll wait for any additional feedback here and if not, update the credits.

All changed, except:

Crime of Passion in the Mansion (1959)
http://hkmdb.com/db/movies/view.mhtml?i ... ay_set=eng

This looks like a Patsy Ka Ling role to me.

Coffee Girl (1963) bears a review if it ever surfaces on video
It's a Cantonese film and the role is listed as 'Yau tai tai', so it's possibly Patsy?

Thanks Dennis! I totally agree with you on Crimes of Passion in the Mansion.

But I'm still wondering about Coffee Girl. It's a small role for Patsy at that time in her career, but perhaps it's a cameo. Did Jia Ling do any Cantonese films? I don't remember any, so that would be one fact in favor of Patsy.

So you agree, Coffee Girl should remain with Patsy Ka Ling?
