I think this gent's name should be changed to his English name of Daniel Yu. My evidence is his most recent screen credits for ALL ABOUT LOVE...





Additionally, when did "Yu" (or "Yue") become "Chui" (or "Tsui") in the database? If this is infact an error, then we have an awful lot of mistakes present as of this writing (I had picked this up some time ago, but figured it was the manner in which translations took place).

"Chui" or "Tsui" has a character like this:

(note the three extra strokes on the family name character)

Whereas "Yu" or "Yue" looks like this:

You are right. "Yu" shd be "yue" in cantonese. There are many more similar translation problems in the database. But one shd not be quick to amend as we may not be sure if it is due to wrong translation of name or that it is the popular name used in screen credit.

This old issue of popular name vs proper translated name is still in the air.
It seem the agreement is to put them in alias. The question is which shd be in the English Name and the other in the alias. So far, I believe the decision lies with the one who created that credit. With no clear policy, creators will do it their different ways.

I have no recommendable solution yet.

Considering that could be the popular name used, so I didn't ask why 余慕蓮 is Chui Miu-Lin instead of Yu Mo-Lin the other day.

Is it possible to remark an English name as a transliteration until it is confirmed? e.g.

成龍 (Transliteration: Shing Lung)

Thanks for the confirmation of what I have suspected for some time, Fan (that "Chui" is actually "Yu" and "Miu" is usually actually "Mo").

Just to clarify, my concern isn't about the English name per se -- it's about that fact that "Yu" is generally being translated as "Chui" (or "Tsui") as whatever the program is that does so is matching one character against the other.

At present, there's a very large number of people of the family name "Yu" accredited as "Chui"...which, from what I gather, is wrong. This now creates a lot of back-track work for someone to sift through and correct -- as Fan reads and writes Chinese, I'm going to have to favour her word. As I said, I had suspected for a long time that the "Chui" translation was incorrect when it came to "Yu", but who's going to listen to some fellow whose primary language is English (with modest-to-fair Chinese character recognition)?
