To bill in Mandarin or Cantonese, that is the question. The eternal riddle when crediting HK movies.
If a cast or crew member spent all or most of their career in the period when Mandarin was the dominant screen language and/or with Shaw Brothers until they fell into decline, then listing them under the Mandarin name is quite okay.
Things become less clear with people who had long careers, only part of which was spent in these periods. Some became famous during this period but made many appearances after e.g. Ku Feng / Guk Fung
The main problem is that each name has to be individually changed, and the Cantonese name *MUST* be entered as an alias. This is for the benefit of many users, myself included, who learned Cantonese with the aid of hkmdb, and know these people only by their Cantonese names.
(Bob, is there any easy way to include a feature which allows the primary name to be changed, whilst automatically pushing the Cantonese / former main name into the Alias field ?)
This is a huge task.
Heinz, if you wish to change the names this way, please go ahead, providing as calros says, such changes of primary name are also notified here on the forum.
