Postby Frank Lakatos » Thu Dec 08, 2005 4:11 pm

Hi! Is it possible for someone to add in the title Mantis Fist Under Falcon Claws(1983), a Tomas Tang Godfrey Ho movie starring Chai Kai and a bunch of Koreans? Thanks.

Preliminary is all set - need Big5 title though, and any other info you may have

Also found this alt title already in the database - does this need to be changed?

Korean Taiwanese coproduction

Postby Frank Lakatos » Thu Dec 08, 2005 5:08 pm

Hi, Gaijin! Hope all is well.

Mantis Under Falcon Claws isn't an alternate title for that movie you mentioned. Mantis Under Falcon Claws is a different movie.

I don't think we'll ever find the Big5 title for Mantis Under Falcon Claws, because it was meant for distribution in the west, and not in Hong Kong.

Chai Kai stars in this as the old master, and Hyeon Kil Su, the samurai from Shaolin Drunk Monk(1983), plays the villain. The credits from that movie are bogus, as they are just pseudonyms Godfrey Ho used. This may be a Taiwanese Korean coproduction shot in Korea, because of Chai Kai being in this movie, and he wouldn't just go to Korea to shoot a movie unless it was some sort of Taiwanese coproduction. Some parts of the choreography looks as if it shot the Taiwanese way, nice shot acrobatic gimmicks, beautiful flips flowing choreography, editing, ect. I believe this is a Taiwanese Korean coproduction, because Chai Kai wouldn't be in a Korean movie without a reason. But, the movie wasn't released in Taiwan, not that I know of.

I have the Korean documentation for the movie:

Thanks

Ok - I deleted the alt title from that other film. I think there was a mix-up because those two movies were part of a "double-feature" DVD

This one starts to weave into the area that was being discussed in antoher string about the addition of non-Hong Kong movies in the database. I'd like to get some opinions from other editors before moving forward with the addtion.

is the director listed (Mitch Wong) another alias for Godfrey Ho?

thanks for the great info though :)

Because of the presence of Ga Hoi, I think the film could be entered into the HKMDB, but only if a Big5 title for the film is found.

That's true; there's no sense renting the film for the spurious English credits.

Those Korean martial arts films almost all did have Big5 titles, which could be seen on the poster and advertising art, but the Korean Film Archive doesn't have a poster image for this film.

Another look...

I took another quick look at the film. In addition to Chia Kai, the film also has Peter Chang as the acrobatic secondary villain.

The English credits are fake and should be ignored. The Korean Film Archive entry in Korean at
http://www.koreafilm.or.kr/DB/db_detail ... taid=03616
does include some production credits in Chinese (including the director), but we still would need to find a Chinese title before entering the film.
