Ciakmull, thanks for compiling the cinematographer information. I've been wondering about the people behind the camera recently. This will be a great help. And I can't believe how many of those on the list I've actually seen!

It can not be. If I put...

1) "No English title": in one year we'll have more than 200 films with "No English title", some of them with the same year. It will be a chaos.

2) Chinese title Big5 in both entries: When you see the english entry, the symbols change to a strange symbols that are not chinese.

Only solution:
Put a literal translation of the titles as english title, and in Commentaries put "Note: this is an estimated title" (or something like that).

As I'm not english, I don't know if the literal translations of these titles sound well:

-"The Foremost Person Patrols the Field"
-"Three Mothers Obtain Enlightenment"

I need the opinion of english-english people.

I think'd I'd personally prefer putting the Big5 in both and the literal translation under Alias as such. Since there is no actual English title, it would be misleading to put one there. The translation could still be found under by the search yet not potentially mislead anyone. Yeah, I'm being overly rigid.

You and me have a chinese characters package, but many people have old PCs which can no (or do not want) upload our chinese symbols. That's the reaseon why the english entry of the HKMDb has the chinese symbols in IMAGE FORMAT.

If we put the original chinese characters, a lot of people will see the entry of that film as:

Not trying to be overly argumentative but, I just don't see a problem with that. The Literal Translation in English will still be below it, which you don't show in your example. My issue is, there is no English title and to put one in and imply that it is, is simply not correct. I'm afraid no one will read the Comment (not sure where that would be).

We have a lot of taiwanese films with "false year" or "estimated year" THAT ARE NOT CORRECT, and explained in the Commentary. I myself put 2 of them, but I have seen about 20 or 30 more.

The HKMDb forces you to put one year and you have to do a trick.

Please, go to my last post (i think you posted your reply at the same time I posted mine) and tell me if you do not see any problem with the "false filmography" of Chan Chor Wai, who did 80 FILMS WITHOUT ENGLISH TITLE. [and in a filmography YOU CAN NOT SEE THE TITTLE ALIAS, this is not the IMDb]


What do you think about these other 2 solutions?

1) Put the literal translation as title and, in the same title, at the end, put [lit.] or [literal translation]?
Example: "Three Mothers Obtain Enlightenment [lit.]"

2) Put the direct translation?

Example: "Chong Yuen Chung Gang"
IMDB does this when they do not have the english translation of one title...

In your previous example, I understand the alias will not show under a person search. But if you click on a specific title or search/English, it will appear. I know, additional clicking, but I am considering from the perspective on a single film while I think you want to see everything by single person with translation title (but in fact there is no such title). Just different. In truth, whether by English name, Chinese name, Chinese title or English literal translation, any of the 4 search method should result in a 'hit' which is my primary objective. Your solution adds the translation factor which I am calling not truly factual. For a practical matter, it's does no good. It cannot be found outside the hkmdb anyway.

(this is a standard case, not aN affected one) (only kiddin')

Obviously you can not search your film with "mother" keyword because you will find...
exactly 83 films with that keyword.

You will go to the Chan Chor Wai entry and will search your mother
between all the titles.

But now you will find that 80 of that titles have odd symbols.
WILL YOU SEARCH THE 80 TITLES CLICKING ONE BY ONE in search of your mother
in their alias?

Here in Spain we prefer searching 1 only time in one list,
althought that list won't have the "real" titles.

I think is faster and easier search 1 title in one list than search 80 titles one by one...

Anyway, as I said, if a third person post their opinion I will accept it as "definitive" ,
whatever it will be. But we need a third opinion that break the 1 against 1.

I opened the thread so I give my opinion... I share dleedlee opinion, if the movie doesn't have an official english title it's wrong to add it. So, according to me, we have to choice between two options: 1) Leave the chinese title as english title (but I don't like this idea very much) or 2) Put the direct translation (i.e. Chong Yuen Chung Gang) of the chinese title, as Carlos suggests. To avoid any misunderstanding we could add the literal traduction as alias (so this unofficial title could be searchable too) and in the comment field we could write a sentence like "This movie doesn't have an official english title".
