Possible wrong director of THE FUTURE HERO. Not Tenky Tin

Postby Brian Thibodeau » Fri Jun 16, 2006 8:34 pm

Just came across an old review of this in my files and noted that, while I couldn't decipher the director's full name, it does NOT appear to be Tenky Tin Kai-man, although he is credited on the VCD sleeve.

The on-screen directing credit would appear to be Lee Kwok-??? (have never been able to make out the last character, nor does it match anyone in the database). I still can't post screen grabs so perhaps someone else has this little cheapie in their collection?

The only name in the DB that comes close to matching the last character is "Kiddy" Lee Kwok-leung, but it seems odd that a props man would graduate to directing (though stranger things have happened):

Could Tenky Tin have used an alias, perhaps? Otherwise, his Chinese name appears nowhere in the opening credits.

According to the HKFA, both seem to be listed as directors. He is listed as 李國民. Cross-referencing, in our db he is listed as Lee Gwok Man

The Chinese characters you listed for Lee Gwok-man indeed match the ones on screen in THE FUTURE HERO, but are you certain it's Lee Gwok-MAN?

The only one I could find in the DB (your link sends me to the FUTURE HERO main page) has a different third character (one which I've always known to be "Man" and one shared by Tenky Tin) but has only an an acting credit in DRUNKEN MASTER III to his credit, which makes me wonder if he'd have any kind of clout to direct a movie, even a junky one like FUTURE HERO.

(By the way, how does everyone get the Chinese characters to display in English language posts? I tried cutting and pasting, but they end up displaying as question marks when posted? Is this just something I can't do on a Mac?)

Gotta love Google translator. I cut and pasted that third character into their Chinese-to-English translation box, and got back "China" as the translation. Putting in the full name gives me "Lee Nationals." They've really gotta cut down on the literal translations over there! Of course, I wouldn't be surprised if a Big Nose like me was missing something in that translation as well...

It appears he's indeed Lee Gwok-man, but he doesn't seem to be the one in the database. Should a new entry be created for this apparent one-timer?

I think our Lee Gwok-Man is not correct.
I think he should be written 李國民 and actually is an action / assistant director of martial arts movies.

Last year I bought "Drunken Master III" to Sazuma Trading to check that name but after 11 months I am yet waiting. :x

Here are the opening credits for FUTURE HERO. They don't list Tenky Tin as director, so I think we still need to either change his role or at least add Lee Gwok-man to the director list. Might be some other additions from these as well:

According to the HKFA there are 2 versions of this movie, because it is a co-production between HK and PRC.
I think your version is the PRC version.

Some of the crew members are different, including the directors.

Your info has been very valuable because part of your crew credits are not at the HKFA.

Changed planner Poon Man-Git by Poon Man-Kit.

Added co-director, writers, more planners, producers, prod. manager, phot. and art dir.!

Cool. :D Perhaps I'll stumble across the Hong Kong version some day, although I'd have to stumble across it because the movie isn't really worth expending too much effort to track down!
