Dead links to images

Postby bkasten » Thu Mar 10, 2005 10:24 pm

All dead links to missing images have now been cleaned up. As well, the original means to actually create the problem has also been permanently eliminated. :x

In the process of cleaning up, I noticed we only have a measly 5200 images in the DB. That's just too embarassing to post on the front page statistics. We could easily have 100,000+ images. Maybe chinchanchung and ciakmull (whose really excellent HK movie sites have a huge number of images) and I could arrange for some sort of exchange

Well, I've tried to do my part. It's been my self-appointed mission these past 5 months and I've added over 500 (I think), mostly black and white pics. Unfortunately, it takes me about one night per film since I usually make about 30-40 captures per film (for myself). And it also means I now have as much time to actually watch a film.

Still working on making better quality captures.

Mainly cast photos:

Yes, I certainly have noticed! In going through all the DB images the past few days, every time I saw a B&W photo, I assumed it was your work

I am now on a mission too. I will also be adding a huge number of screen caps as well.

In addition, as an aside, I want to take the opportunity with the new "DB view" pages to incorporate more images as well as an actual database relationship between people images and the specific movies from which the pic comes. That is a relation that is not required with the current database schema, but one I really think is required. chinchanchung's site makes extensive use of actors' images specific to each film, and that really is nice for giving a feel for the film. Also, I think each person and movie view page could incorporate many more (albeit smaller) images. I hope to have some working prototypes of those new view pages up this weekend...

Well, I figured since I can't write a decent movie review, I should make some contribution to the database.

That's a pity. You're watching all these old films, many of which (I'm guessing) are not reviewed.

Could you let us know which, in your opinion, are worth watching pls ? And perhaps assign a star rating. And even which ones are awful and to avoid ;)

The above list would be a great start. I'd love to get into the older and Shaw films, but no real idea where to start.

I've been thinking about chucking some more reviews into the pot. I still write them but don't post them. They're mainly a mixture of plot summaries and cast lists. And now with the HKFA available they do a better job than I can at both. Still point is points :)

Anyway, here's some reviews I wrote before I got fed up with my own reviews (scroll down): http://www.hkmdb.com/db/reviews/list.mh ... t_letter=d
And while you're on that page you might be interested in, fellow editor, duriandave's reviews further down.

You might notice for the most part I'm not particulary discriminating. I enjoy them all to a greater or lesser extent, unless I flat out just don't understand what's going on, as in many of the cantonese operas or musicals where so much of the tale is told in song.

I'm not a real fan of the Shaw films except the huangmei operas and low brow comedies like the Mr FunnyBone films, or dramas like My Name Ain't Suzie. I prefer the Cathay films over most of the Shaws, in general

General points all taken.

Still, for films otherwise unreviewed, any comment is better than none, no matter how humble the reviewer.
Hope you'll sometime get unsick of your reviews, and post those still unposted :|

I agree with STSH! Better to post them, dleedlee. Even if they don't meet your own personal standards, they will undoubtedly be appreciated by others--myself for starters!
