Giving extras a Chinese identity

Postby Stinkdog » Wed Jul 01, 2020 12:27 pm

The current version of the database will not display [extra] roles in Chinese. So I'm introducing some of them. Wikipedia chose “????” literally “Temporary Actor”. If this doesn’t fit for some actors who continuing their career, There's another “????” literally “Crowd Actor”. Please tell me your opinion And maybe process it if you agreed.

Let me review the entire database for any [extra] credits in English as they map to Big5. I can/could/will apply large scale update to do this as necessary. I think the question is which one to use. In addition, is not one or the other commonly used in films' actual credits?

Liu, the DB has about 7300+ [extra] credits but only 33 films have any mapped to a Big5 role name. In some cases ???? has been used.

If ???? can be considered the Chinese standard for [extra], then I can update any of these missing [extra] role fields in big5 all at once.

Here are the films thusly credited (and soon I will be shortening these ridiculously long URLs):

It's a bunch of mess in my limited experience. Like Hollywood in the pre-union period, extra actors/actresses in the Kung Fu/Shaw decade are always missing in credits. For later on, I just checked my home-video supply.
Here is most of the situation.
1.only main and supporting actors.
2. using "Associate Performers"-"????" to extras.
3. using "Acting"-“??” to extras.
4. using "Joined Performance"-"????" to extras.
5. simply "performer"-“??” Once for all.
6. using "co-performers"-"??" to extras and supporting actors mixed up.
The list goes on and on.
And Later, later on, in the Mainland-Hong Kong cooperate period, credits also follow mainland habits by calling them “????” or“ ????”, From now on they stopped imaging new words. So this is my most recommended. But it depends on everyone here.

But I think, I'm the only one, who use them

Thanks Alex, this is good. Like our editor Joyce (Fan), our editor Liu (Stinkdog) is also a native Chinese speaker and can reconfirm these. If indeed this is the case I can apply all of these to the Big5 credits where these specific English credits exist. Like I said above we have 7300 [extra] credits without corresponding Big5 credits. I can review some of these other generic credits as well.

Now I learned. It seems that I ignored it because these changes are not affected. It's funny that we seem to have the same taste in movies because I remember that every movie I've looked upon HKMDB has at least one or two extras......

We are talking ONLY about existing [extra] credits in big5 - particularly for those credits that already exist in English and not in Big5. Carlos and Jean - your preferences for labeling roles are useful, but are the subject of a different thread (that can be started for the purposes of perhaps altering our editor guidelines).

At this point any English role assigned [extra] with a corresponding NULL entry in Big5 will be reassigned to ????. I will execute this change in the near future unless someone comes up with a good argument to the contrary. Any further posts into this topic should be arguments to that effect.
[Extra] - [????]

I will also audit some of these other generic roles and see if they map to empty Big5 entries.
