Summary
At the end of the Japanese rule in Taiwan, all the able-bodied men in the fields were dragged to Southeast Asia to serve as soldiers. The two brothers, tenant farmers Afa and Kuozui were spared because of trachoma caused by their mother's folk remedy. But life without becoming a soldier was not much better. They had an old mother to support, a crazy sister in the middle, and a group of children to take care of. The harvest of the few acres of land they planted was not good. To make matters worse, the landlord decided to take back these acres of land and sell them. This worried the two brothers. Translated from Chinese.
