Summary |
|
When Xiang’s father is killed, Xiang takes the news hard and becomes rebellious. He must now support his mother and sister, so his buddy Gen Lai gets him a menial job in a grocery. The boss is a slavedriving miser who distrusts Xiang because he looks like a young layabout. The boss proves to be an excellent judge of character, as Xiang proves that he will never win Employee Of The Month. Xiang is surly with the boss, slow to react to orders (i.e. he takes more than one second !), sneaks extras to customers without payment and takes many opportunities to goof off, especially when a lovely young girl customer captures his attention.
……….
A humiliating encounter with thugs leads Xiang to beg Gen Lai to teach him kung fu. Xiang becomes an able fighting student under Gen Lai’s Sifu, imaging his boss’s face in the punching bag. But Sifu is worried that, though he quickly becomes the best fighter in the school, he is savage and full of hatred. So when he beats up his fellow students in a fit of rage one day, Sifu shows him the door.
……….
This only increases his burning hatred. One day he delivers groceries to house of the thugs who beat him up, who are competing in front of their boss, a local gang leader. Unimpressed with their fighting, Xiang challenges them all and wins. The boss is very impressed and offers him a well-paid job.
……….
Xiang lavishes the money on his family. His sister is delighted, but mother is puzzled, worrying he has fallen in with a bad crowd. Of course, he has, but he hides this from his family. In the meantime, he has become progressively more disrespectful and rude towards the grocer.
……….
Gen Lai has since joined the police force. It seems Xiang’s new career will cause them the two friends to become adversaries ….
