Guo Xiao-lu, creator of the acclaimed docudrama HOW IS YOUR FISH TODAY? (4th HKAFF), directs WE WENT TO WONDERLAND, an unusual journey to the west starring the director’s own parents. Shot in black-and-white using the movie function of a digital still camera, this minimalist documentary chronicles their first and possibly the last trip - her father is suffered from cancer - to Europe, revealing less a cultural divide than an intimate understanding of two individuals taking in a larger world. Guo remains invisible behind the camera, with her unassuming technique, the evocative images, and her two unique subjects leading the way. |
