Summary |

Businessman Yusheng returns from the big city to his home village, Sanhetun, after years of absence when he receives news of the death of his father, Changyu. His grief-stricken mother, Zhao Di, insists that the funeral follow ancient traditions which, among other things, requires that the shroud be hand-woven and that able men be found to carry the coffin. Watching his mother prepare the shroud, Yusheng reflects on his parents' love story. At eighteen, Zhao Di had done everything in her powers to capture the heart of Changyu after he arrived to take the post of the new village teacher. (Asian Film Library) |
