Summary |
|
Kwok Ho illegally crosses into HK with his pregnant wife. Lucky to reach HK alive, the couple are denied by his elder brother Kwok Ying, who is cheating Kwok Ho out of half of the inheritance. Ho gets the message - to be successful in HK, use any means possible.
Eight years pass, and Ho has become a rich and successful gangster. His motivation, a burning desire to revenge to betrayal of his brother, has only increased over this time. He launches a plan to disgrace Ying and his wife. The plan succeeds, but Ying is a devious bastard, and he strikes back. In the cycle of revenge which follows, things don't go smoothly for either side.
And Ho has other problems. Perhaps because of the rough crossing, or because her sister-in-law kicked her during pregnancy, Ho's wife gives birth to a retarded son. Ho is so ashamed that he has the boy kept in an institution.
And as the plotting and counter-plotting becomes more intense, more and more people are drawn in, and many lives are either lost or destroyed or both.
Get the picture ? Ho is a man whose humanity has been corrupted and twisted by the desire for revenge. Alan Tang plays this complicated and dark character who becomes and even exceeds the horrible people he hates. All in all, a parable of the dark side of success in HK. |
