Summer Breeze of Love

Saw it a few years back, was mildly entertained then. Was just on my way to throw it out of my collection (running out of room); popped the disc in for one last look. Surprisingly, it thoroughly charmed me and I couldn't take my eyes off. Dave Wong Kit is the man. Good stuff if you've already seen it once and feel bored perhaps.

Utterly banal summer teen movie starring Twins. The girls chat on their cell phones a lot, randomly fall in love with completely inexplicable boys, get nervous, giddy, upset and talk on their cell phones some more.

I have to admit that the sight of Twins is normally enough to make me happy, but even their charming smiles could not prevent this movie being as painful a viewing experience as I can recall.

May conceivably appeal to hormonal brain dead teens, but likely to cause severe nausea in any normal human being. May prove terminal.

Avoid.

As a starring vehicle for teenage pop sensation The Twins, this movie is a frothy little confection that lives off the charm of the two leads, an assortment of quirky supporting characters and a script that successfully manages to find a balance between humour and heart-felt emotions, with any trace of pretentiousness or artificial melodrama refreshingly absent.

Sure, all this is aimed primarily at teenage girls (a target group I certainly do not belong to) and the story never aspires to be anything other than entertainment, but at least the emotional turmoil of the two stars is shown with a certain degree of authenticity, the dialogue is characterized by effortless banter that at times is rather witty, and the film easily captures the angst and passion, the spontaneity, insecurity and downright stupidity associated with being young.

While not substantial enough to make me go out of my way to rewatch this film, I would still consider it a satisfying 100 minutes of bubblegum cinema.
