The Umbrella Story

Summary: Good

The full version is a bit painfully long at times (almost 3 hours), but overall (despite the odd boring scene) it's very well down.

Recommended.

Decent effort by Clifton Ko in trying to retell the story of the Umbrella Store. The effects by Golden Centro was a little disappointing, but it's great seeing Bruce having so much screen time. The beginning was great with Law Koon Lan, dropped off a little after Alice Lau married into the family, but picked up again later by the FX and Hui Fan's portrayal as Auntie Chuen, a HAKKA woman. [Hello, is Chris here?] Not as good as I Have a Date with Spring, but the story and premise are different. To Kwok Wai did a decent job on the story and screenplay. My only complaint is that it didn't cross into the future far enough, as the story ended in the 60s/70s...

The story of the family and workers behind the Leung So Kee umbrella factory, from 1886 - 1967. Apparently based on a real company which closed its doors in 1986. A few cute vignettes, lots of filler. The digitized scenes with old HK icons are used more as a gimick, and don't really move the story along. The movie has a similar feel to _I Will Wait For You_ and _I Have a Date With Spring_, both also directed by Clifton Ko Chi Sum.
