Manic, remarkably mean-spirited sequel sees little hope for Hong Kong Chinese at home and even less abroad, as papa Bill Tung moves the clan to Vancouver, Canada, a land of spacious Saveways, Texan accents and suburban blandness (where people sit out on lawn chairs in the winter!) that quickly turns ugly in a variety of contrived ways, such as when Bill and “student” Lowell Lo run afoul of murderous truck drivers, middle daughter Loletta Lee gets stripped to her underwear in a university hazing (well, OK, I kinda enjoyed that...), eldest daughter Elsie Chan dates a gweilo punk, and little Pauline Kwan becomes a kidnap victim when mom Lydia Shum wins Canada’s Lotto 649 jackpot. The filmmakers’ ignorance of - and overt racism towards - foreign cultures (including the Chinese diaspora) is staggering enough once they remove their characters from the congestion of Hong Kong, but it’s matched by a cynical disdain for the citizens of that city in the opening minutes, jarringly articulated in two scenes: one where Bill and Lydia endure a subway ride surrounded by “other Asians” who practically make them sick, and another where the giving of traditional New Year’s red packets is portrayed as a merciless cash grab. A bleak, tiring rehash of everything that worked well in the first film, including gags lifted verbatim from THE BENNY HILL SHOW. Reviewer Score: 2
