Pom Pom Strikes Back!

Pom Pom Strikes Back! is a typical entry in the series, which stars Richard Ng (Ah Chou) and John Shum (Beethoven) as bumbling police officers who manage to save the day despite themselves.

Ah Chou and Beethoven are assigned to protect a teenage witness (May Lo) against killers sent by an international gangster, while Ah Chou's wife (Deannie Yip) is sent to transport the defendant to Hong Kong for trial. The girl is oblivious to the dangers that she faces and is looking to duck her guards and have fun, while Ah Chou is looking to take advantage of his wife's absence, and Beethoven has several opportunities to display his kung fu "skills." A medical error leads Ah Chou to recklessly expose himself to danger, but the boys prevail in the end, of course.

Richard Ng and John Shum are funny as usual, Deannie Yip again gamely plays the grown up supervising two big kids, and May Lo is cute as the girl in peril.

Pom Pom Strikes Back! doesn't break any new ground, but anyone who enjoyed the previous movies in the series should like this one too.

Summary: one of the best of the four...

yep, i've enjoyed this series. the first one was very entertaining, the second was almost as good and the third wasn't as good, but it was odd enough to get away with it. this, the fourth and final installment of pom pom was right up there with the first film.

once again, we follow ah chou (richard ng), beethoven (john shum) and anna (deannie yip) as they become involved in a huge fraud case. anna is off to singapore to extradite said fraudster, whilst ah chou and beethoven are charged with guarding may, a former girlfriend of the fraudster, soon to be a police witness.

as ever, there's plenty of sight gags, physical and situation comedy, but we get some nicely done, fun fight sequences thrown in here as well.

good stuff.

Pom Pom Strikes Back(1986) This is the only Pom Pom movie that sticks to the story instead of breaking down into skits, and a great improvement to the series is the fact that tough guy Chan Wai Man, an opposite to the comedic Shum and Ng, plays the villain, play the triad villain sent after them, so Shum and Ng have much on their hands in this one! This movie is well written and the action and comedic moments are perfectly timed and choreographed, and the pace never slows down, which makes it interesting to watch. The hotel scenes are a riot, when in a set up, Ng courts all types of disfunctional women and tranvestites, while a Mariachi band of Malaysians play La Paloma! It doesn't get better than this when it comes to Hong Kong comedy! Besides the Pom Pom original, this is
one of the best of the series and the last movie in the series as well. High recommended. ***1/2/*****

Summary: First 2 were better

Watch the original Pom Pom and the 2nd movie Return Of Pom Pom, those 2 are very funny. This one got quite stupid.

Rating 2/5

(This rating is based on the year & genre, so don't think it's based as a comparison on new releases etc.)

Loveable, bumbling cops Ng and Sham protect a young lass frompsycho-triad Chan Wai Man. Lots of great sight gags, Richard Ng courting a transvestite and singing with a mariachi band, and some action. Gotta love the "golden age."
