Summary: Good cast including Sammo, but overall average...
Tin Erh Keng (Chang Yi), confronts a former general (Hsieh Hsing) and tries to kill him for complaining about his superior to the king. The generalâs son witnesses the murder as well as some key details of the incident, He eventually goes to the Shaolin temple and begs to be admitted and learn kung fu. After 10 years of arduous tasks, he becomes one of the top students. Shang Yung (Carter Huang) is sent out into the world to find his calling. Meanwhile, Hsiao Yun Erh (Polly Shang) is in training under her adopted-father Keng and his minions, becoming a formidable fighter. She crosses paths with Shang Yung and is determined to kill him after he beats some of Kengâs men. Eventually, loyalties become closed as it appears that Yun Erh is more than she appears. As the plot thickens, who is playing who?
Despite a very good cast, there isnât a lot here to recommend. Carter Huang and Polly Shang are fun to watch, but they donât have overwhelmingly great martial art skills per se. The best fight is between Huang and Sammo Hung, who uses a nice mantis style against Carterâs snake. There is also a unique part when Chang Yiâs guards, on cue from drumming, form a human wall as protection for him, and utilize different attacks to prevent any breaches. You can definitely tell there are wires used, but itâs still fun. The final battle is fine, but lacks a real stand-out performer to make it special. Worth a watch, but not ahead of more established classics.
