Reviewed by: STSH Date: 04/04/2006 Summary: Chinese Batman A sort of Chinese version of Batman (Batcave and all), with a couple assistants (one is Lam Ching Ying, behind glasses and a beard) and a knockout boomerang. He's just trying to prevent crime and fight the "baddies", but they keep trying to entrap him. If that isn't enough, he's aroused the attention of a pesky and pretty HK reporter, who keeps showing up and needing to be resuced. Yes, it does have that Saturday- afternoon serial mentality. The story starts fairly slowly, meanders around for the first half, which is sparingly interrupted by a couple of pretty tame and stagey fights. There's a definite point from which the film picks up : when Hornet and the Police Captain square off, in what is effectively a draw. From here, the fight scenes are more frequent and much better, though still nothing fantastic. The best fights are between Hornet and an American-accented foreigner (labouring under the delusion that he's a German !). Warning to the sensitive (and don't laugh ! I do know one or two HK movie fans to whom this applies !) : the final shoot-out scene contains the sort of body count HK films are justly famous for. In case you haven't guessed, the storyline and acting are nothing to get excited about, and it's a very low-budget effort. OVERALL : A not-very-inspiring directorial effort for Lam Ching Ying. It's just a little good entertainment for sunday afternoon but pleasant.Lam Ching-ying and Chin Kar-lok show they are honest "makers" films. A little amazing piece from HK! Leepifer.

Reviewed by: pjshimmer Date: 02/04/2002 Poor Lam Ching Ying, his career is highly distinguished in HK, and he's done some incredible stuff. But his last movie is one of his most embarrassing. The budget is so phenomenally low that it might have given Lam a heart attack when he saw the gross #s. In any case, they did a pretty good job given the budget. The main power held by the Green Hornet is his ability to move around superfast. But the leads are uncharismatic & the story is unappealing. I'm impressed, though, that they were able to pull out a whole 90 minutes for its release. The thing with the Green Hornet, as Lam Ching Ying implies in the film, is that a Hornet has been in existence ever since China was united (prior to Emperor Qing Shi Huang), and every few decades a new Hornet emerges. The idea is another superhero like Batmand and Spider man, nothing that you haven't seen in the West. Yu Rong Guang is pretty good as the cop. [6/10]

The poor production values are painfully obvious, Lam Ching Ying does what he can but it still can't save this movie. They fights are great but the sets are shoddy and the story wasn't that great. In a weird scene that takes place in the Hornet's secret hideout, they suggest that the previous incarnation of the Green Hornet was undone by his lust for fame. 5/10 Reviewer Score: 5
