Lo Rei is a fighter looking for a teacher capable of beating him and thus teach him. He has been undefeated for 5 years until by luck he runs into a shaolin monk, who's master is better than him. He wants to learn but the master wont take any students. He runs into a girl who he protects and the chief of this evil clan is actually a traitor of shaolin. Lo rei finally gets accepted to be a monk and i think u can guess the rest The shaolin training scenes are actually better that i expected, i like the rubber band idea The action scenes are sped up and at times its very obvious, so obvious that someone falls to the ground dead faster than usual. The fight scenes are nothing special There is a particularly funny scene, when Lo Rei asks for medicine from the monk, but the monk asks how can i get medicine, im not hurt!! CAn you guess what happens next? One thing, when you have a fight scene in the dark and someone is wearing black, make sure the lighting is a little better!! Thank goodness the scene was a short one OR how about spitting out spit/or water for some effect on the blow they recieved, but once it occured before being hit!! OVerall its watchable despite its flaws and yet entertaining Reviewer Score: 6

Lo Rei goes to Shaolin to learn kung fu in the Taiwanes eversion, while in the Korean version, Lo rei avenges his father's(Korean actor Philip Chang Yi Tao) death by the Korean Chang Shan. The renegade chicken eating monk and Lo rei's chi training is the reason to see this movie. Besides that, the action seems sped up and average. It's one of the most overated movies ever, especially in the UK. The Korean version titled the Great Shaolin Master is currently out of print. ***/*****

Reviewed by: mpongpun Date: 04/29/2002 Alexander Lo plays a kung fu activist named Sun Yu Ting who has to find the best Master in the land to teach him. One day, after a fruitless search for a gung fu Master, he helps a young Shaolin monk named Hsu Erh (William Yen) from getting his ass kicked by some bullies. The two hit it off and soon Yu Ting uses this opportunity to get Hsu Erh to sneak him into Shaolin so his Master (Sun Jung Chi) can teach him. Yu Ting's plan fails as Hsu Erh's Master turns him down for his own reasons. Eventually, Yu Ting is discovered at Shaolin and is forced to leave but he later returns with a pretty girl (Li Wei Yun) who is wanted by the Sky Hawk gang. The Golden Wheel Lama, Yau Fang Lin (Chan Shan), who was a once a Shaolin Monk now turned sworn enemy of Shaolin, invades Shaolin to kill the girl. Chaos starts to swirl at Shaolin, so Hsu Erh's Master, realizing that Yu Ting is sincere, kind, and a lover of the martial arts, decides to teach Yu Ting the required "special" techniques to defeat the Lama.

Reviewed by: MrBooth Date: 11/08/2001 Summary: Excellent old school A kung fu fanatic persuades a monk to smuggle him into the Shaolin temple to learn from his master, but the master refuses to take him as a student. Much learning kung fu by subterfuge until he is officially accepted as a student in order to challenge the Lamas who are attacking Shaolin. Great fight scenes and a well made film. DVD is full frame but decent quality.
