The better Hong Kong directors know how to mix up any number of genres and still produce coherent and exciting movies. Norman Law is not one of those directors. Reviewer Score: 5

Reviewed by: dandan Date: 03/08/2006 Summary: like a hong kong version of 'green card'... ...not that i've seen 'green card'. anyhow... joey wong makes her way across the border into hong kong, losing her cousin en route, before ending up with a snake handler who attempts to assault her. she manages to escape, after smashing a bottle across his face, but ends up roaming the streets. then, whilst shoplifting, she becomes entangled with chow yun fat and lui fong, two bumbling cops, who nearly get her killed. chow yun fat takes pity on joey wong and takes her back to his flat; something his girlfriend isn't too pleased with... the film then plays out as a drama, with touches of comedy and romance. i have to say that i thought it was great; both chow yun fat and joey wong were extremely likable and the development of their relationship was handled very well. there is, however, a nasty sting in the tail, when the snake handler (complete with large facial scar) turns up for revenge... i was suprised at how much i enjoyed this, which afforded the ending a greater impact...

A Hearty Response(1986) An interesting movie, as it doesn't know what type of movie it wants to be. It starts off as a cruel escape to Hong Kong movie, then it turns into cutsey romance comedy and then takes a serious turn to rape scenes and bloody revenge. This rough mix of genres produced by Alan Tang and his brother Rover, stars the charismatic Joey Wong and Chow Yun Fat, who are talented enough to really make all of the elments in the script work. There are some well choreograped action scenes, and interestingly, the sound effects change throught the movie, as it starts off with the sound effects used in Sammo Hung's old school movie but at the end, the fighting sound effects change to the loud kickboxing sound effects used in the Sammo Hung movies of the movies made around the time of this movie. This change of effects has never happened in any D&B Golden Harvest productions. Worth a viewing if you are in the mood for something sleazy. Moderately recommended. **1/2/*****

Reviewed by: Inner Strength Date: 03/27/2002 Summary: Excellent When it comes to Hong Kong dramas, they are usually either way over the top or are too ridiculous to take seriously. A Hearty Response is different. A strong story, with character building more than you might expect, as the couple grow to love each other more through out the film. I think that explains why I felt so sad by the time it ended, because I had grown attached to the characters as though they were real people who I knew. I think the action and crime presence in the film helps to a certain extent too, without it turning into a ‘gun-battle-every-5-minutes’ film! A certain amount of comedy takes place too, but the perfect amount for a film like this, not stupid jokes every 5 minutes turning it into a farce, but just enough to make it enjoyable. The story has already been summed up in the other reviews, so I won’t go any further on that. I will say though, that the ending is very sad, but to be honest, it was expected (though I don’t remember it being so brutal when I first saw it). But the final scenes are not so bad. Joey Wong is excellent as ever, I can’t think of anyone else who could have done a better job. Chow Yun Fat also seems like he was born to play the role. Although the other performers are okay, they are not really onscreen long enough to make a lasting impression. Law Man and Li Wen Zhuo had both created a masterpiece in comparison to other films like this, and wasn’t for a good 10 years I think until I saw another film which was quite as powerful as this. Recommended. Rating [4.5/5]

Reviewed by: hkcinema Date: 12/08/1999 Joey Wong is a homeless immigrant caught shoplifting in the same supermarket cop Chow Yun Fat and his sidekick Lui Fong are in as they attempt to apprehend a drug traffiker. Joey is accidentally injured in the process however and off to the hospital she goes, where she seizes the opportunity and feigns amnesia and acts as if Chow is her imaginary husband. She finds temporary shelter in his abode, bonds with his mother and eventually they do fall in love. However, a sleezy smuggler whom Joey had confronted with earlier in the movie finds her, kidnaps her, tattoos her and rapes her, which leads to the final shootout. There is enough action in Hearty Response to hold you throughout the film and some big name actors are an added plus. The relationship between Joey and Chow is developed convincingly which makes this a watchable action/ romance/ drama flick. At the very least, you learn what to do when choking on a chicken bone.
