Fear of Intimacy

Summary: Fine follow-up film for LEAVING IN SORROW's Vincent Chui

Award winning photographer Fai (Tony Leung Kar Fei) is having a few ups and downs with his girlfriend Po (Stephanie Lam), who left Canada and her studies to be with him. One morning, after another verbal scuffle, she disappears. Five years on, Fai is still working but has slipped in station to lowly paparazzi; on the back of receiving a new partner, Singaporean Suet (Michelle Saram), they happen across a murder of a socialite.

Nice second film from Vincent Chui, of LEAVING IN SORROW (2001) fame, which explores how stuck in a rut Leung’s character is, both when he had his long-time girlfriend and after her disappearance. Everyone (Leung, Lam, Saram and even newcomer Jonathan Cheung) is exceptionally good and, like counterpart 2005 production THE UNUSUAL YOUTH, FEAR makes good use of its locations (namely the hilly surrounds of Shek O Gardens). There’s a few twists and turns along the way as well that make things delightfully more engaging – but definitely an arthouse drama, albeit a well shot and acted one. Promotional copy attempted to portray this as a mystery, however the mystery element is dispensed with by mid-film and thereafter it segues into an interesting, as well as thoughtful, character study. Off the beaten path and recommended.
