Easternlight picks up international rights to Champions
Arclight Films' Easternlight division will handle international sales, excluding certain Asian territories, to recently completed martial arts action epic Champions, produced by Hong Kong-based Sundream Motion Pictures.

The film, which is directed by veteran filmmaker and Sundream president Tsui Siuming, centres on the Chinese martial arts team that participated in the 1936 Berlin Olympics.

Tsui also produced the film with Sundream's Amy Li and Tom Cheung. Dicky Cheung heads the cast along with Xie Miao, Priscilla Wong and Debbie Goh. Sundream also recently produced Zhang Yibai's Lost Indulgence, which screened at Tribeca earlier this year, and was a co-producer on Yu Lik-wai's Venice competition title Plastic City.

Territories excluded from Easternlight's deal on Champions are Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia. Sundream will release the film in Hong Kong later this year while Enlight Pictures will handle distribution in mainland China.

Easternlight managing director Ying Ye said: " China made its very first mark in the Olympic Games in 1936 when nine martial artists participated in the Games. Their showcase performance stunned the world and created a martial arts frenzy in Europe.

"Champions is the story of the individual who brought kung-fu onto the world stage, and is an homage to the classic Shaw Brothers kung-fu movies."

Easternlight will screen the film and commence sales at the upcoming American Film Market (AFM).

Jonathan Ross suspended over phone pranks
(only mentioning this since folks are probably aware of his efforts promoting HK/Asian cinema to the west)

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/media ... 77485.html
If Ross's reported £6 million annual salary is not withdrawn during his suspension, he could still be earning £16,000 a day at the BBC for doing no work.

You know, that Jonathan Ross thing is EVERYWHERE in this country at the moment. What most people don't know is this: when the programme broadcast earlier this month, there were TWO complaints about their behaviour. The following week, the Daily Mail (basically an ultra-conservative rag that disapproves of everything from video games to...well, probably every single film that comes out of HK) ran a piece on it and it then garnered THOUSANDS of complaints.

I'm NOT excusing what they did. It was stupid and not even all that funny (despite Brands' comments). But the simple fact is that TWO people heard this stuff when it was broadcast and complained. These other people clearly did not hear the broadcast at the time and are relying on the papers' interpretation to form their opinions. You can hear the broadcast on Youtube if you want, but I'll bet you ten of your favourite currency versus one of mine that you'll agree it sounds MUCH worse in print than it does in the actual broadcast.

I was looking in the newspaper rack at the local newsagent tonight and it was plastered all the front page of EVERY tabloid like they were mass murderers. On the way to the place where I read those headlines, I passed several people discussing the subject. It's our biggest news story since Princess Di, I think. Must be a slow news year...
