Escape From Huang Shi
Chow Yun Fat's kissing scene cut

(4/1/2008) ESCAPE FROM HUANGSHI earlier held a press conference at
Huangshi, Hubei, one of the leads Chow Yun Fat attended with his wife
Jasmine. However, Michelle Yeoh (Yeung Chi King), Jonathan Rhys-Myer
and Radha Mitchell did not attend due to other work. Only Fat Gor and
director Roger Spottiswoode appeared. However, Fat Gor's charisma was
amazing as over hundred media outlets covered the event. To honor Fat
Gor's charity contribution and his work in Huangshi, after the press
conference he was invited to a stadium to accept a good citizenship award
from the Huangshi city government.

The always humorous Fat Gor showed his true color at the press
conference. Fat Gor put his eight year old co-star on his lap during the
interview and asked whether he wanted to be an actor, a successful actor,
an actor who is more successful than him? The boy expressed that he
would like to be more successful than Chow Yun Fat and the entire venue
laughed.
Fat Gor and Radha Mitchell's kiss scene was cut, which the media
asked about. The director saw how awkward the situation was and
immediately explained that Fat Gor's expression was too sexy in it. He
did not want the audience to focus on that kiss scene and could only cut
it.

(4/2/2008) Chow Yun Fat two nights ago continued to promote ESCAPE FROM
HUANGSHI in Huangshi, Wuhan and attended the film's charity event with
stars like Michael Kong Leung, Li Bingbing and Bibi Zhou Bichang.

The event had several hundred uniform police and security guards
as well as police dogs to protect Fat Gor. While everyone screamed for
Fat Gor, the event arranged child actor asked him, "Uncle Fat!" Fat Gor
first pretended to be embarrassed and then laughed, "You are just 8, I am
20 years older than you, I am really old." Then another child called him
"Elder Uncle Chow". Fat Gor smartly pretended not to heard then asked
himsef, "Who is Elder Uncle Chow?"

The event originally arranged a private meal for director Roger
Spottiswoode and Fat Gor, but Li Bingbing came uninvited. She finally
was able to get a picture with Fat Gor and Fat Soh. Fat Soh meanwhile
has arranged for a masseur so Fat Gor could properly rest after work.
However that masseur immediately cried out of excitement as soon as he
saw the superstar and Fat Gor was stunned on the spot.

Johnnie to and Chow Yun Fat to work together?

(3/27/2008) The film ESCAPE FROM HUANGSHI two nights ago held a
premiere. Earlier rumored to be upset at being a "supporting star" and
thus absent from the promotion, Michelle Yeoh (Yeung Chi King) did not
appear as only Chow Yun Fat held the fort. Fat Gor joked that he too was
a "supporting star". He believed that Yeung Chi King would not be upset
at being a "supporting star" and not promote. After working in Mexico for
two months he joked that he skipped out and never saw the "obscene
photos". Because lately he had to train in martial art he had to be
abstinent and could look at thme even less.

Fat Gor and Fat Soh attended the premiere but Yeung Chi King and
Jonathan Rhys-Myers did not. Fat Gor said that both were working. He
joked that this way his thunder was safe in tact as he would have the
opportunity to "fill in the gaps". He said, in the film actually he and
Yeung Chi King were both "supporting stars". Only he did not know which
was the "big support". Did he charge a "supporting star" rate? Fat Gor
said that the question should be addressed to Fat Soh. ESCAPE FROM
HUANGSHI will be released at the same time as Leon Lai Ming's THE EMPRESS
AND THE WARRIORS (GONG SAN MEI YUN) and Andy Lau Tak Wa's THREE KINGDOMS
RESURRECTION OF THE DRAGON. Fat Gor looked upon his opponents favorably
and would like to take time to show his support.

Fat Gor with POSTMODERN LIFE OF MY AUNT received his first Hong
Kong Film Award Best Supporting Actor nomination. He joked that he was
truly very nervous and was so happy that he could not sleep. Since he was
a new comer to supporting actor he really wanted the award. He would bet
on himself to win. He also picked Siqin Gaowa and Lau Ching Wa for Best
Actress and Best Actor, and Shao Yam Yam for Best Supporting Actress. He
picked THE WARLORDS for Best Picture but supported Ann Hui On Wa for Best
Director. Fat Gor also said that the Best Screenplay should go to AUNT
because THE WARLORDS had eight screenwriters. Eight awards would cost
too much. Fat Gor also pointed out that earlier Korean film SECRET
SUNSHINE swept many major awards at the Asian Film Award. He would like
the Hong Kong Film Award to be more "evenly divided".

Sunday Fat Gor would attend the Huangshi premier with the film's
director and Yeung Chi King. Fat Gor would receive the city's Good
Citizenship certificate. Later he and Gong Li would work on SHANGHAI.
Because of screenplay inspection issue, the shoot would take place in
Thailand. Reportedly STORM RIDERS 2 would also shoot there. He joked
that he could get Ekin, Aaron Kwok Fu Sing and Nicholas Tse Ting Fung to
make SHANGHAI STORM RIDERS. He would also work on a new film with
Johnnie To Kei Fung and Kong Chi Keung's company.

Two upcoming films on Tin Shui Wai
Ann Hui's "The Way We Are" and Lawrence Ah Mon's "Beseiged City"

TWO OPPOSITE TIN SHUI WAI MOVIES

At the Hong Kong International Film Festival I saw two Hong Kong
films about Tin Shui Wai, THE WAY WE ARE (TIN SHUI WAI DIK YUT YU YEH) and
BESIEGED CITY (WAI SING). One is bright while the other dark, each with
its own fun and together they make a strong contrast. Yet they also make
Tin Shui Wai into RASHOMON as the audience has no idea what the truth is.

In recent years Tin Shui Wai has had many tragic events and become
a local news focus, yet some feel that the media have excessively
accentuated the tragedies. Ann Hui On Wa's new film THE WAY WE ARE is
just the opposite as it focuses on humanity in this world. It can be
called "good people and events of Tin Shui Wai".

In the film the middle age mother (Bau Hei Jing) who works in a
supermarket lives with her son (Leung Chun Lung) who is waiting for the
HKCEE results. Mama is very hard work and kind hearted as she constantly
helps an old woman who lives alone in the neighborhood; the son looks
lazy but actually is very nice and gentle. He often visits his
grandmother who is hospitalized and even obediently helps with chores
without any complaint.

This film is like a life diary. Without cooking up drama, it
captures ordinary household chores and minor incidents between family,
friends and classmates. The most interesting is the son's question and
answer at church, the most touching is when Mama accompanies the lonely
old woman to visit her relatives. In the end the Mid Autumn Festival
scene is also very sentimental.

Bau Hei Jing and Leung Chun Lung both perform very natural and
intimate, truly they are good mother and son. However the entire film is
just ordinary and lacks plot. It also makes Tin Shui Wai look very
orderly and beautiful. Does this new satellite city have any problem at
all?

Reportedly Tin Shui Wai's new immigrant family problems have had
Hui On Wa's attention long ago and she has done a lot of research, yet she
had a hard time with the production start. Now she makes one with family
warmth and kindness, does not mention new immigrants. No one knows when
the original one would be completed.

The Lawrence Ah Mon (Lau Kwok Cheung) directed BESIEGED CITY is
also a documentary style fiction but takes the other extreme. It
dramatically describes a family incest tragedy and the survival of the
fittest at school, which lead to a group of young people leaving home,
rebeling, going on a crime spree and even falling into a gang war.

BESIEGED CITY is like hell on earth, actually it is similar to
Lau Kwok Cheung's first film GANGS (TUNG DONG) twenty years ago but even
darker and crueler. However it also is exaggeratingly cooked up and
only uses Tin Shui Wai as its backdrop.

The film festival also premiered the Lawrence Ah Mon and Scud (Wan
Yu) co-directed CITY WITHOUT BASEBALL (MO YEH JI SING), with the Hong Kong
baseball team representatives and Taiwan coach personally performing
several stories between training and games. Their performance is very
lively and the film has many wonderful and interesting details.

This film is worthy of attention and this baseball team is worthy
of support. However the film likes to shoot male nudity more than
officially introduce baseball, which seems a little strange.
