Actor ID for non-DB title: DEVIL DYNAMITE

Postby Brian Thibodeau » Wed Aug 22, 2007 2:53 am

Watched the wonderfully wretched Tomas Tang stitch-fest double feature ROBO VAMPIRE and DEVIL DYNAMITE recently and thought perhaps the latter title should be added to the database. However, all the credits are English only, and largely made up, outside of producer/"production designer" Tang himself. So I didn't bother getting credits, though I can if someone figures it's necessary.

In the meantime, here's some headshots of the mostly Chinese casts from the two movies used to build DEVIL DYNAMITE. one of which appears to be a crime melodrama starring Angela Mao Ying. There are so many familiar faces here that, even if they can't be added to the DB, I'm just curious to know who the heck they are!

and some shots from the movie:

The second feature mashed-up into DEVIL DYNAMITE may just be insert footage crafted by Tang and persons unknown to pad the film out to 90 minutes, or it may actually be stolen from another (unfinished??) cheapo feature for the same reason. Some cast members:

(plays the Robo Warrior/"Futuristic Warrior" in the shots below. The movie is sold as an erzatz sequel to ROBO VAMPIRE, but the silver-suited crimefighters in both are completely different characters, and the one here is just a guy in a silly suit, where as the one in ROBO VAMPIRE is supposed to be an "androibot"

and some more silly shots from the movie:

and finally, here's a few random shots from the awful (and awfully entertaining) ROBO VAMPIRE, just in case anybody's on a roll identifiying some of these performers. I kinda think this one should be added to the DB as well, even though is features far more HK-based caucasian actors than Asian and more than half the film is ripped from some average late 70s/early 80's Thai mercenary movie starring Sorapong Chatree, but there's more than enough footage shot in Hong Kong to warrant inclusion, I think. Not many pictures here, but I can add more if anyone decides to make an entry for the film:

Kong To (one of only two ID'd at Hong Kong Digital)

Image
Sun Chien (... and the only other one ID'd by Hong Kong Digital)

The "androibot" Robo-Warrior (some white dude in a crappy homemade suit)

vs. the hopping dead!

The principal hopping dead vampire actually wears a gorilla mask! Ed Wood would be so proud.

Enjoy! Feedback encouraged as always!

Thanks so much for the links!

I kinda suspected Angela Mao wasn't right, but went with what little few reviews I could find about DEVIL DYNAMITE (leading offender: IMDB ) as I was in a bit of a rush last night. Essentially, every review I've seen claims Angela Mao plays the villainess "Mad Mary" when in fact her role, at least in DEVIL DYNAMITE, is peripheral. I'll fix my original post soon.

Originally, I did multiple grabs of some of these actors, because I wasn't sure which ones would give me usable quality thanks to the poor nature of the print on the Brentwood discs. Ironically many of the ones I didn't use here are almost identical to the ones Bruce used. Of course, there are only so many "clean" spots from which to get good grabs sometimes.

If anyone wants to add these shots to the GIANT OF CASINO page, feel free, especially now that it's obvious they really are from that film. :D

And, if DEVIL DYNAMITE was deemed worthy of it's own entry, we'd at least have a more accurate cast list. As I mentioned, I suspect most, if not all, of the English names in the opening credits are made up.

Also, I think we should add DEVIL DYNAMITE (the Tang film's actual onscreen title, not DEVIL'S as appears on mosts packages) as an alias to GIANT OF CASINO, or better yet, a footnote indicating that major portions of the film were reworked into DEVIL.

Added the DEVIL DYNAMITE as alias to "Giant of Casino".

Sun Chien (mostly brief parts) and Chiang Tao/Kong Do are in many ninja, war and kickbox movies of Lai and others. Always in the new scenes. Chiang Tao is also the action director of many of them (credited as Tony Kong or similiar names). Other people who appear a few times in new scenes for ninja and kickbox movies are Ko Fei, John Cheung, Ridley Tsui, Ho Pak-Kwong, Yue Tau-Wan and Jeng Kei-Ying.
It is always interesting to buy one of that movies and to see what movie was used and who is in the new scenes.
Now a list of a few of the movies who are used in the Joseph Lai/Godfrey Ho ninja/vampire/kickbox movies I have seen: two with Lam Chi-Foo, one late 80s movie with Wang Inn Sik, "Struggle for Leader", "Mixed Up", "The Magnificent", "Daring Kung Fu Refugee" "Queen Bee" (O Chun-Hung), "Temptation" (Luk Siu-Fan) and that two movies I added to the database:

http://hkmdb.com/db/movies/view.mhtml?i ... ay_set=eng
(was my first movie with new ninja scenes - first I thought what a strange movie is this!)

I have to admit that the most interesting part of these Tomas Tang stitch jobs has been trying to figure out his ingredients! With DEVIL DYNAMITE, he was using a film from an era (very early 80's) that I'm not overly familiar with yet. In the case of ROBO VAMPIRE, the cuts in huge chunks of a Thai mercenary movie that doesn't even bear the visual "signifiers" of a Hong Kong film (not very dynamically edited; scene compositions are far more generic and "western"). Plus, the Thai footage is cut into newer "Robo-warrior vs. hopping vampires" footage that features mostly caucasian actors, nd bad ones at that. The only scene in the whole movie that really pops is, as you might suspect, an early sequence with Kong To and Sun Chien packing bags of coke into the vampire coffins. Sun Chien accidentally awakens the vampires and they all have a rather well choreographed martial arts battle around the mausoleum or whatever it is, presumably the work of Kong To.

I should also point out that the print used for ROBOVAMPIRE on the Deimos/BCI double feature DVD is actuallly 2.35:1 widescreen. Still looks pretty dreary and isn't anamoprhic (not that it would help), but at least you can see the whole picture, or pictures, as the case may be
