I probably shouldn't have, but I picked up Dragon Dynasty's ROYAL TRAMP COLLECTION (new) for $4.99CDN at a bargain department store on the way home tonight. Heard rough things about the quality of the set, but from Dragon Dynasty I'd expect no less than a mixed bag. I've seen these before, so this will be an affordable revisit at the very least! ;)

I went through several Rarescope releases this month, so I'm a bit skewed on quality :D. Finished Amazons and Supermen which is one of the strangest coproductions (well mostly Shaw Brother's lending two of their actors).

The quality on the Royal Tramp set is neither bad nor great. Fun set (though nowhere near my favorite Chow acted films), liked the interview (there could have been more extras though) have yet to go to the commentaries though. I'm not sure how it compares to the Fortune Star release though. The good news for you though is that the DD release is OOP.

Here's DVDBeaver on that release: http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film3/dvd_revi ... ection.htm

After a far too long hiatus, I picked up a few of the "more senior" Hong Kong titles;

Ebola Syndrome (1996)
Passing Flickers (1982)
Broken Oath (1977)
The Human Goddess (1971)
The Magnificent Warrior (1968)

The perfect remedy for a cold, rainy and windy weekend. Hoping for many more weekends like this!

Another trip home to the family, another trip across the border to Big Lots. VERY nice score this time - they recently put out a huge batch of bundled Genius Products, Wellspring and Winstar DVDs of import, arthouse, documentaries etc, each with three discs for $3.00!  Unfortunately, this means you sometimes have to take a title (or two) that you don't want to get a couple of titles (or one) that you do, but for a buck a movie, you can't lose. Here's the 3-packs I found (there were others). Bold titles are those that have been on my mental wanna-see lists for ages (plus some Korean films I've already seen), the rest are headed to Amazon marketplace (unless some kind folks here have good words for them):

THE INTRUDER (Claire Denis; 2006)
THE RESTLESS (Cho Dong-oh; 2006) This is one of my all-time favorite Korean fantasy/action movies - great to get it for a dollar!
LASSIE (Charles Sturridge; 2005)

Z (Costa-Gavras; 1968) 8) This is the Wellsprings version, which has supplements not found on the Criterion, including a director commentary
THE ROYAL DIARIES
THE EX (Jesse Peretz; 2006)

A DIRTY CARNIVAL (Yoo Ha; 2006)
TYPHOON (Kwak Kyung-Taek; 2006)
HAPPY HOUR (Mike Bencivenga; 2006)

MARGARET CHO - NOTORIOUS C.H.O. (2002)
MARGARET CHO - I'M THE ONE THAT I WANT (2000)
THE BALLAD OF RAMBLIN' JACK (2000)

INCUBUS (Leslie Stevens; 1965 - the Shatner Esperanto movie) - already own
TARNATION (Jonathan Caouette; 2004)
STRINGS (Anders Ronnow Klarlund; 2004)

Other titles I've read are turning up in these bundles: Wild Tigers I Have Known, Adventures of Felix, The Chaos Experiment, Clockwatchers, Good Morning, Night (Marco Bellocchio), Kings & Queen, The Beat That My Heart Skipped, Palindromes, Carla's Song (Ken Loach), Sea Spies, Notre Musique (Godard), Yi Yi (Edward Yang), Digging to China, Double Parked, Margaret Cho: Assassin.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Also picked up at Big Lots today for $3 each:
LOVE FINDS ANDY HARDY (1938)
BAGHEAD (2008)
THE 300 SPARTANS (1961)
MARRIAGE ON THE ROCKS (1965)
SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES (2008)
GARBO (TCM Documentary; 2005)
100 RIFLES (1969)

From Amazon:
THE WILD CHILD (Truffaut; 1970)
CQ (2002)
Two of many MGM discs reduced to $3.99 at Amazon
LOGAN'S RUN - Blu-Ray

Sometimes finding used movies can be a blessing. Especially at FYE where I get to double coupons. Tuesday I'll post all the stuff I got for my birthday (FYE gives a 10 percent bonus on that day).

As usual you got a pretty good bunch of stuff Brian. I've been wanting to watch The Wild Child for quite a while. I've seen 9 Truffaut films which means I have a bit more to go :D (seen all but The Last Metro on Criterion). I own but have not watched yet The Bride Wore Black which seems that Tarantino took a bit from (like he did with Shoot The Piano Player :D for Pulp Fiction).

It seems that as DVD wheezes through its final years, Big Lots is fast becoming the ONLY place to pick up a lot of odds 'n ends you might have missed or were simply been curious to see over the years. I went over this weekend with no expectations. I'd read about the $3 three-packs on another forum, but the titles they were posting didn't immediately jump out at me. Once I saw the packs in-store, and realized these were quality releases of art-house and import movies from legitimate distributors, many of which I'd heard about from online reviews or during their screenings at the TIFF, I had to bite at that price, and I'd urge our American pallies here to at least check out their nearest Big Lots for more of the same (mullets and wife-beaters optional, of course) - sometimes it seems like Shawn and I are the only ones who have access to a store.

Just read elsewhere that some stores have a three -pack containing the Dragon Dynasty edition of HARD BOILED. For a dollar! Now that's a fair price to pay to listen to Bey Logan (sorry, couldn't resist). The Michigan store I visited on the weekend had several sets that included DD's edition of Johnnie To's PTU. They also had a boatload of bundled three-packs featuring various ESPN sports DVDs (compilations, documentaries, mini-series, etc.).

In retrospect (and as always), I'm thinking I should've bought doubles and triples of several of these three-packs for resale on Amazon.ca (it's virtually impossible to find this stuff in Canadian stores anymore), as funding for future goodies from Hong Kong. I might be in Buffalo this weekend, so maybe I'll stock up there. :)

Finally got around to sorting through the weekend pickups and realized I'd forgotten to list a small batch

20th Century Fox 75th Studio Classics Collection:
AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER
LEAVE HER TO HEAVEN
A LETTER TO THREE WIVES
PEYTON PLACE

Fox has several of these four-film sets available and/or releasing in the months ahead. These are 4-disc sets collecting previous Studio Classics editions (extras and all) into one single DVD case. There have been 15 sets released/announced so far, some better than others depending on taste, but most under unspoken thematic umbrellas (this one appears to be melodramas). Found several at Target (in the U.S.) for $9.99 each, which is the cheapest I've seen them anywhere. Hope to add a few more in the future. Very nice companion sets to the TCM Greatest Classic Movies and Warner 4 Film Favorites collections.

Found a place in Michigan called Family Video (a chain, I presume?) that was selling off a lot of used stuff for $2.95 a pop, so found these:

REC
BLACK DYNAMITE
(absolutely loved this!)
MILLENNIUM DRAGON (1999)
This is from a company called Vanguard Cinema. Never heard of them. Only version listed on Amazon is from Tai Seng, and that's different. Wondering if this is some low-end purveyor of "public domain" movies that aren't really public domain. Sleeve looks OK, although Chin Siu-ho is billed as Siu-hou Ching, and Lily Chung is now Lily Cung. Oh well, guess I'll find out.

More leftover DVDs from the Warden Movie & Music shop on the way home last night. $5 each:

THE INVINCIBLE POWER OF KINDNESS (1993; Widesight) I may already have this on VCD, can remember. :(
GHOST FOR SALES (1991; Widesight)
ANOTHER CHINESE COP (1996; Thakral - jewel case, no less! )
NEWS HEART (2003; Modern)
IN BETWEEN LOVES (1989; Deltamac)
TWILIGHT ZONE COPS: ANGELS MODEL (2002; Modern) Had to get this to complete the set!

An interesting (well, to me, anyways!) note about MODELS ANGEL. My DVD version does not say TWILIGHT ZONE COPS anywhere on the package. The sleeve pictured in the DB definitely puts it as part of the series, but my sleeve makes it look more like a fluffy romantic comedy/drama which, judging from the quick skip-through I gave it last night, is exactly what it is. I have to wonder if it was just some cheap programmer they decided to lump in with the TZC series to boost what little sales they probably got! Here's the sleeve on mine.

Weird timing! I just picked this up a couple of weeks ago. You listing it made me realize I forgot to include it in previous posts. I think I must have found the last shelf copy in the entire city, and even then it was sitting behind a whole bunch of other DVDs.

We decided on a trip to Buffalo today to do some shopping, so naturally, I couldn't resist dropping into a couple of big lots for some more $3 three-packs. Both stores were fairly picked over, but I scooped up a load of doubles and triples—and stuff I'll never watch—for the express purpose of relisting them on Amazon.ca, where they fetch anywhere from five to twenty times what I paid. I won't bother listing them here as they don't really matter, but I did find three I'll hold on to, for now:

THE BRONX IS BURNING (ESPN Miniseries; 2007)
RED LIGHTS (Cedric Kahn; French; 2004)
PTU (Johnnie To; 2003) Dragon Dynasty Edition

The copyright info on PTU claims it's a 2001 picture. Typical DD typo, typical DD ignorance, or some smarmy in-joke reference to the length of time it took To to complete the picture?

I picked up a few more titles this last week;

First some Shaw brothers titles:
Whose baby is in the classroom (1969)
The Tiger and the widow (1981)
The amorous Lotus Pan (1963)
Too late for Love (1966)
The scandalous warlord (1979)
Two con men (1975)

Then a number Japanese titles;
Underworld beauty (1958)
Delinquent girl boss (1970)
Yo yo girl cop (2006)
Sister street fighter (1974)
Sister street fighter: hanging by a thread (1974)
Return of the sister street fighter (1975)
Sister street fighter : fifth level fist (1976)
Yakuza graveyard (1976)
3 seconds before explosion (1967)
cops vs. thugs (1976)

then a few Thai titles;
Raging phoenix (2009)
The hitman file (2005)
The bodyguard 2 (2007)

and finally a PRC title;
Back to back, face to face (1994)

After this load of 20 films, I thought that will do me for a while (as if  ) but as luck would have it I found a store selling many old films from the PRC in Chinatown, so I have started furiously saving my pennies to go and pick up some old Chinese titles real soon. It also means more late nights (or early mornings?) but definitely worth the lack of sleep :D .

Does this version have English subs by any chance? The Thai edition doesn't, as far as I can tell, and I'd really like to see this.

I know all about the late nights, early mornings and lack of sleep, not just from Hong Kong movies, but from all the other movies I've been listing in this thread. I really do hope to pare things back in the future (to focus more on HK stuff), but falling prices and closeout stores are doing their best to hobble me. There's never been a better (or more affordable) time to broaden one's cinematic horizons. Pity (but predictable, I suppose) that it comes in the waning days of disc-based formats. Still, there are warehouses full of unsold DVDs out there even as we speak that will inevitably turn up cheap.

Thankfully, this weekend's purchases—all from a Father's Day Blu/DVD sale at our major electronics chain that was actually decent for a change—were all films I'd previously seen (three on the big screen; one a DVD upgrade), so they won't need to be watched for ages:

2012: 2-Disc Special Edition (Blu-ray)
DISTRICT 9 (Blu-ray)
MOON (Blu-ray) Amazing movie!
VANISHING POINT (1971) - upgrade

Yes this edition does have English subtitles,it is a Cine Asia (UK) release, http://www.cine-asia.co.uk/Raging-Phoenix-DVD/125/ so it is region 2. They have some other good titles, like Chocolate, another great Thai film, starring "Jeeja" Yanin Vismistananda. You are spot on about some Thai editions not having English subtitles (for whatever reason), even when the DVD cover art has the English language used for the title, the story summary, disc details etc!

It reminds me of lots of old Thai films available in Thailand (mostly on VCD) that are either without subtitles or subtitled in Thai only. So frustrating for non Thai speakers like myself, being able to read the film summary but being all at sea with the actual dialogue (yeah I did buy them anyway ) in the film. One shopkeeper suggested that it would be quicker for me to learn Thai (no matter how bad a student) than wait for subtitled versions to be released. Maybe I should have followed his advice.

Thanks for the confirmation. Might have to pick that one up.

So true. I run hot-and-cold on Thai cinema in general. Find the stuff too derivative (of itself) and/or repetitive. Generally, I'm content to grab HK releases of Thai films as these tend to be the country's highest-profile (and generally most polished) productions, although the abundance of horror films picked up by HK distributors gets tiresome after awhile. I see what I can, but it's been ages since I've ordered from Thailand because of the subtitle issue. :(

Anyways, some new cross-border pickups during another visit home for Father's Day. Believe it or not, I skipped Big Lots altogether  :

20th Century Fox 75th Studio Classics Collection (4 film set):
ANNA AND THE KING OF SIAM
CAN-CAN
DADDY LONG LEGS
STAR!
(wish this wasn't included, as it bored me many moons ago, but whatever . . .)
Six of these Fox 75th Anniversary sets are currently on sale at the Target chain in the U.S. for $8.99 , regular $9.99, both of which are the cheapest prices anywhere for these. Hoping they get more.

THE RUNDOWN - Blu-ray Upgrade
BLOOD: THE LAST VAMPIRE - Blu-ray (used)

A few "kinda-wanted-to-see" DVDs from a grocery store bargain bin, further reduced to 3/$5, or about $1.67 each, from 3/$10. I've read good things about 'em, so for that price, it was easy to assume a little risk
THE LIFE AND DEATH OF PETER SELLERS
RKO 281
ZATHURA
THE FOUNTAIN
HAIRSPRAY
(2007)

This one's going to be big (actually I think I'll post a later one). The Target's in Modesto/Riverbank have been carrying the first six of the quad sets. Most of the below is stuff I got for my b-day end of last month. Lost Keaton was a pre-order and I still haven't received (Deep Discount). Several of the films in the quad sets I already have, but glad to have these sets anyways. I'll check later to see if there are any extras or how these were ported. Lady Killer from the warner gangster set is a great pre-code film btw.

The discs in these sets are identical to the original releases, and thus retain all the supplements 8) . In cases where the original was a two-disc set, the second disc has been dropped, but those were few and far between in the Fox Cinema Classics series. PEYTON PLACE is a two-sided disc, movie on one side, bonus materials on the other and, as you noted in your list, the LES MISERABLE disc contains two versions of the film. I'm sure other sets will have discs like this. For $8.99, these are must-haves for anyone wanting to brush up on studio and filmmaking history (commentaries galore!). So far, 15 of these 4-packs have been released or announced, and I'm really hoping Target will stock more of them at these prices. I've heard they're also selling the TCM GREATEST CLASSIC MOVIES collections for $9.99, but I haven't bothered to look for those as I have most of them already.

Thanks for the news Brian. I'll pick up more if Target gets more. There is a lot of material to watch (and listen to) then on top of the other films I need to watch etc... I think we should get a reward anytime we finish a long running series (I ended up watching Aces Go Places #5; no I haven't seen the 97 version :D).

I'd be interested to know what you think of this when you eventually get it!

A couple of the Educational shorts are in the Kino box set of Keaton. They are not quite as good as the Columbia shorts (I have the box set of that) and nowhere near his shorts of the 1920s. What Keaton DVDs do you have Cal?

I have The Buster Keaton Chronicles, which was certainly a good place to start. I still haven't watched a couple of the features, but I've watched all of the shorts.

A few recent HK and Asian additions:

Legendary Collection DVDs:
A HEROIC FIGHT (1986)
ITCHY FINGERS (1979)
HOW TO BE A BILLIONAIRE? WITHOUT REALLY TRYING (1989)
SISTER CUPID (1987)
INVINCIBLE (1992)
SUPER FOOL (1981)
MY LITTLE SENTIMENTAL FRIEND (1984)
TIGER CAGE 1-3 (really only needed the third one, but NO ONE in this town was selling them separately, only taped together. It's a conspiracy I tells ya)

HERE COMES FORTUNE (2010) DB has "Fortune King is Coming To Town" as the main title, which I believe is the mainland Chinese "English" title. Screen caps should clear this up.
FUTURE X COPS (2010)
CROSSING HENNESSY (2010)
WOMB GHOSTS (2010)
ECHOES OF THE RAINBOW (2010)
JUST ANOTHER PANDORA'S BOX (2010)

And a couple from Japan (Hong Kong DVDs, of course)
PANDEMIC (2009)
AIR DOLL (2009) At last year's Toronto Film Fest I was forced to choose between this and Hitoshi Matsumoto's SYMBOL, which started great but turned unbearably pretentious enough in its third act that I had to wonder if I'd missed out on the better film (the reviews of both seemed to confirm that I had, so I guess I'll see . . . )

And, since Keaton seems to be the subject du jour, I'll add a couple of Kino Blu-rays I purchased for only $9.99  at BestBuy.com a couple days back, even though I haven't actually received them yet:

THE GENERAL (1926)
BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN (1925)

POTEMKIN has disappeared from the site, but THE GENERAL is still available for $9.99, as are Kino's Blu-ray releases of Wong Kar-wai's HAPPY TOGETHER and FALLEN ANGELS. Contemplating a second order for those. These are all online-only, by the way, so jump while you can if you're interested.
