Asian goodies at the Toronto International Film Festival

Postby Brian Thibodeau » Tue Aug 23, 2005 5:01 pm

Full list just announced a few minutes ago. A quick scan found the following:

SYMPATHY FOR LADY VENGEANCE by Park Chan-wook
SPL by Wilson Yip
SEVEN SWORDS by TSUI HARK
THE MYTH by Stanley Tong and Jackie Chan
DUELLIST by Lee Myung-se
WAYWARD CLOUD by Tsai Ming-liang
GREAT YOKAI WAR by Takashi Miike
BANGKOK LOCO by Pornchai Hongrattanaporn

Now if I can just get tickets before they sell out. I will have to kill people if SYMPATHY is shown on a weekday when I can only go on weekends. Also, THE MYTH is a gala premiere, so one has to hope if Messrs. Tong and Chan will be in attendance, particularly as the latter has contributed to some Chinese-Canadian charities and could use the trip as an excuse to visit the place he's supported over the years.

Never heard of Bangkok Loco and Wayward Cloud. It would be nice to see Spook War on the big screen though. No luck with Seven Swords being the full cut is there? :)

Wow. Didn't expect to see this thread revived.

Just so you know, Lam Du, the Toronto Film Festival was held September 2005 (notice the date on my original post), so most of these movies are probably available on DVD by now; they simply premiered at the TIFF. The link in my first post should still connect you to the Toronto Film Fest Site, but you'll have to scroll down through the complete film list on that page to find the individual titles, then click on each one for more information. You might be able to do a search for a specific title form the site's home page. The only ones I saw were THE MYTH, which was OK, and SHA PO LANG (SPL), which rocked. Missed out repeatedly on tickets to LADY VENGEANCE, which had the stars and director in attendance, so that kinda sucked, but I ended up springing for the Korean 2-disc DVD and was not disappointed. SEVEN SWORDS sold out as well, but as far as I know, it was the same cut as is on the DVD, possibly with minor differences, but definitely not the full cut.
