| Chan was born on May 1, 1974 in Taipei, with a lineage from Ye County in Henan province. She was discovered by leading Japanese cosmetic brand Shiseido cast her in their ad when she was in high school. Hsu Feng of Taiwan's Tomson Films noticed the ad and invited Chan to sign a 8-year acting contract. Her screen debut in Tomson was ''Highschool Girls''. Unfortunately, Tomson's productions were halted due to the downfall of the industry, so Chan terminated her contract with Tomson and joined Shaw Brothers with starring roles in ''The Twin Bracelets'' and ''Look Out, Officer!''. Chan had also appeared in various top-ratings TV serials, such as ''The Story of Prune''.
