Born in 1942, in Canton, China, Hui joined TVB in 1971 to host a TV show, the Hui Brothers' Show. In 1972, one of Shaw's most succesful director at the time, Li Han-Hsiang, offered Hui the lead role in his comedy ''The Warlord'' which was one of the top three highest grossing film at that time. It earned Hui the Best Comedy Character Development Award at the 1973 Asian Film Festival.
Before leaving Shaws, Hui also starred in three other Li Han-Hsiang directed films, ''The Happiest Moment'', ''Scandal'' and the daring erotic ''Sinful Confessions''.
In 1982 Hui won the Best Actor Award at the 1st HK Film Awards for
''Security Unlimited'' and he also won the Best Actor Award at the 1989 International Comedy Awards for ''Chicken and Duck Talk''.
