Yan Qiurong (Chen Shuzhuang) chances on scholar Gai Liangcai (Ye Qingfa) and the two spend together a night of passion. As it turns out, Gai is a faithless man and swiftly marries Wen Shuzhen (Lin Shunqing) following his father's (Zhang Changcheng) words. Yan, now pregnant, seeks Gai out and the truth soon dawns on Wen. To hide his sins, Gai puts his murderous hands on both women. When Wen, who survives the turmoil, sees Yan perish before her very eyes, she decides to bring her own husband to justice. This second Chaozhou-dialect production by Hongtu Company and Guangdong Chaozhou Opera Troupe tells the typical tale of the wicked husband.
On top of that are touches untypical of the genre, such as Wen questioning her father-in-law and the father interrogating his own son. The pared-down dialogue and verse-like lyrics come across as literary work in its own right. Compared with The Story of Sixth Madam Su, the film is one step ahead in terms of editing, camerawork and framing, all testimony to the fact that film and opera can indeed complement each other.
