Chez N'Ham Story

Summary: Too wacky- even for me!

Eric Tsang is an actor most people either love or hate. Personally I love him! I even make a point of trying to track down some of his more obscure movies. This film however, went too far even for me.

Chez N' Ham Story (or Curry & Pepper III), is a film about two bumbling wannabe gangsters Cheese (Dicky Cheung), and Ham (Eric Tsang). For the first half hour or so, these two get in various get rich quick schemes that fail miserably.

Finally some element of plot is introduced when these two morons are hired to kill Joey Wong for 10 million. They come up with the idea of passing Cheese off as a little kid and much of the movie has him crawling a round a play pen devising ways to kill Joey.

The final part of the movie does have some pretty decent action scenes. Blacky Ko plays an excellent psycho, and the movie does end with a bang. The action scene at the end does bring the film up a point or two.

As mentioned earlier, I am a fan of Eric Tsang acting like a screwball. Although he did give me a few laughs, this one just wasn't working for me. I have also never seen an HK movie with so many gay references. They went way over the top in that category.

I would have scored this film even lower, but it does have three things going for it: Tsang dressing up in goofy costumes, a good action scene, and very catchy theme music.

Two bumbling ne'er-do-wells named Cheese and Ham (Dicky Cheung and Eric Tsang) run a revenge-for-hire business. They have their share of scrapes and follies, but things seem to be going well until they are hired by a terminally ill man who wants his girlfriend (Joey Wong) killed. They reluctantly take the job and then back out one they both fall in love with the girl.

How much you enjoy this movie probably depends on how much you like (or can tolerate) Eric Tsang's antics. I personally find him pretty funny, but many people think he's annoying as hell. They would probably think that even more so after watching this movie, since he seems to be terminally hopped up on goofballs -- practically bouncing off the walls. I must admit it got to me after a while; even Ng Man-Tat (who plays Joey Wong's bodyguard) seemed sedate by comparison. There are some pretty funny sequences in the movie, but a lot of the jokes depend too much on Cantonese slang and pop culture references (even more so than your average Stephen Chow movie) to be really funny to most Western viewers. Still, Chez N' Ham is probably still worth a viewing if you are into HK comedy or want a look into what it's like. You just may want to keep a bottle of aspirin handy.

Summary: Enjoyable, but extremely silly and tasteless

I think the other reviewers are being a bit tough on this one.

Agreed, for the first half, the wackiness and mouth-open-wide expressions are very forced and even irritating, but I found the second half worked quite well. Either the cast gradually warmed to the task, or I became acclimatized to the silliness.

If nothing else, Joey's almost literally angelic character makes this film watchable. She's at her lovely radiant best, especially playing a character who radiates good and naivete.

After the too-silly first half, Blacky Ko injects some ripper action sequences, and the one where he mainly duels with Ng Man Tat is excellent.

Of course, the question of why anyone would want Joey assassinated is not one which this wild farce dwells upon. It also has the (for that time in HK film) regulation swipe at gay men, with all the sensitivity of a pair of sledgehammers.

Certainly no classic, but if you can get over the less-than-great first half, good silly fun.

Summary: 3.5/10-Idiotic

I think the word "Idiotic" sums this film up.

Chez 'n' Ham are two former prisoners who have to kill Joey Wong, a rich, sweet, can't-do-anything-wrong woman. There are stupid, brainless jokes in this. While not a total waste of film, it's certainly a waste of time.

Two ex-convicts Chez and Ham decide to open up a service to helpneedy people to take revenge on those who have done them wrong. Their crazy idea obviously is a disaster and the two men are caught in more than a few harrowing but amusing situations.

For reasons I can't begin to fathom, everybody has a contract out on Joey Wong, a sweet young thing who just happens to be rich. Chez and Ham are a goofy wanna-be Laurel and Hardy promised ten million for the hit. I sat there, mouth slung wide open, as if I'd just watched Springtime for Hitler. You simply can't imagine.
