The Cat

Lam Nai-Choi goes all out in what would be his final film, full of crazy special effects and inventive action. Unfortunately the script is thin, Gloria Yip's acting is bad and Waise Lee seems disengaged at best.

Philip Kwok and the animals do their best to pick up the slack. Be warned though, think about the disregard HK filmmakers had for the health/life of their stuntmen... having fur doesn't appear to change that for the better.

Summary: 'that darn cat' vs 'the blob'

a film featuring the popular character 'wisely' (played by perennial hong kong bad guy 'waise lee'); a horror / adventure writer, who seems to become involved in adventues, more fantastic than his novels.

in this film, he teams up with an alien princess (gloria yip), her knight (lau siu-ming) and a cat (a cat), to fight a strange blob-like creature that absorbs some people and takes over the bodies of others. there's plenty of fun to be had with a film that slips between sci-fi, comedy, action and horror; plus there's a choreographed fight between a dog and the aforemention cat that is an absolute joy to behold.

fun, fun, fun...

In this rather insane mixture of fantasy, horror, science fiction, action and comedy, two good aliens, along with a black cat (also alien), come to Earth to fight another, bad, alien. Unter the direction of Nam Lai-Choi (aka Lan Nai Kai aka Ngai Kai Lam aka Simon Nam) of Story of Ricky (1991) fame, hardcore splatter mixes uneasily with naive fantasy. While many Hong Kong movies successfully mix genres, it doesn't work in The Cat: a mean-spirited streak runs through the movie, enhanced by an unnerving and humorless synthesizer score. The special effects frequently make the movie's low budget background all too transparent and despite the wild plot and world-wide threat, the film lacks scope.

Summary: Entertaining X-Files like horror flick

This 1992 movie is a joy to watch, particularly if you want to watch something not so heavy. Gloria Yip looked pretty in her black dress and with her black cat. The plot of this story is about a duel between two alien races who come to earth to collect some emblem. Wisely, a well known detective, (like sherlock holmes) assists Gloria's alien team to battle the other aliens. The special effects in this movie is cheesy and has an 80's feel to it. Not really a scary movie but the cat and dog fight scene is classic. This movie might pass as an X-file episode if you place Mulder and Scully somewhere in there. Out of 10, I'd give it 8.3, this is one of those b-movie hk hidden gems.

Summary: good clean fun

Man, I love seeing Waise Lee play a character named Wisely. I could also watch the scene in this film where the supernatural cat fights a really tough dog over and over again until my brain turns to pudding. What a great scene. Man, that cat really fights that dog. Yep. Great stuff.

Oh yeah, the movie. Honestly, I saw this about three weeks ago (sober, I might add), and I can barely remember anything about the plot. Something about good aliens versus bad aliens, with Wisely in the middle. I recall being very much entertained. This film does great things with special effects that don't look they cost a whole lot, but are used with such inventiveness and energy that you won't care.

Also recommended for anyone who's only seen Waise Lee play a bad guy. Like most talented Hong Kong actors, he has a much wider range than I had previously assumed.

Crazy horror story, involving some space aliens, a blob-likemonster, an unstoppable Terminator-like maniac and a cat called "The General". (He's actually an alien. Don't ask.) Also some stop-motion animation. I had fun! This is another film about the popular Wisely character, a horror novelist.

There is shades of THE THING, THE BLOB and THE TERMINATOR in this not very good but enjoyable (for good and bad reasons) sci-fi/horror film. The plot is about an old man, a young girl and her cat who are in fact visitors from another planet who came to Earth in order to stop a killer from outer space. I have no idea what Waise Lee is doing is such a low budget exploitation flick. The directing (from "STORY OF RICKY"'s fame Nam Lai-choi) is very uneven and the special effects are, most of the time, very cheesy (even according to the usual HK standards). But there is a fight scene between the cat and a dog which worth the rental price, just imagine for a second a cat doing a body-slam to a dog and you'll get the picture....
